First of all, it depends entirely on you — your goals, your background, and the kind of life you want. There is no direct comparison between UPSC and SSC CGL. They serve very different purposes. UPSC (IAS / IPS) gives you power, authority, and immense responsibility. Being an IAS or IPS officer is not easy. Every major issue in your area becomes your responsibility. If you are not honest and hardworking, you will constantly face pressure, scrutiny, and challenges. But yes — it is a generational achievement. It has the potential to change the course of your entire family and future generations. SSC CGL posts like ASO do not come with power or authority, but they offer something equally valuable — peace and stability. Office hours are usually 9:30 to 6, Monday to Friday. Once you leave the office, work stays there (at least that’s true in my case). The job is not hectic, pays well, and suits people who value a balanced, peaceful life. With promotions, when you reach Under Secretary or above, responsibilities do increase — but they are nowhere close to the pressure and scale of responsibility faced by IAS/IPS officers. So what should you choose? If becoming an IAS/IPS officer is truly your dream and you can afford the time and risk — give your best 1–2 attempts to UPSC with full dedication. If you clear it, that’s great. If not, don’t get stuck in its vicious cycle. Shift to SSC CGL or other jobs, secure a stable career, and then prepare alongside the job if you still wish to try again. But if you come from a lower or middle-class background, and getting a job is a priority — SSC CGL is one of the best options. It gives you financial security, mental peace, and enough time to prepare further if you want. There is no superior exam. There is only a right decision for your situation. Choose wisely.
