With 5 Books, you want to cover 5 parts of the game:
1️⃣ CHESS: 5334 Chess Problems by László Polgar
You NEED to practice your tactical ability: TO WIN. This book has it ALL.
The author trained his three daughters to become Grandmasters, all breaking records.
The book is THICK and should be used as a way to practice the basic mates all the way to hard combinations.
Highly recommend.
2️⃣ Silman’s Complete Endgame Course by Jeremy Silman
Another big book that if you are a beginner, you profit the most from as it starts very easy and climbs in difficulty by chapter.
Studied seriously, this book can make you go from beginner to intermediate quite efficiently.
It is FULL. It has all you need for your endgames.
Why study the endgame even if it might not come up in your game?
Endgames are the base of chess. Don’t take it from me, take it from our 3rd World Champion José Raúl Capablanca:
“In order to improve your game, you must study the endgame before everything else, for whereas the endings can be studied and mastered by themselves, the middle game and the opening must be studied in relation to the endgame.”
3️⃣ & 4️⃣ Mastering Chess Openings Volume 1 and Volume 2 by John Nunn
You need a book that tells you what to do in the opening moves (and what you should do versus your opponent!).
John Nunn is a Grandmaster who is talented at explaining the subtleties in full simplicity.
I have used these books for over 15 years since I was a kid. They helped get my feet off the ground and not be clueless in the opening
Volume 1 is for players that play 1. e4 and Volume 2 for players of 1. d4
My argument for needing both is simple: You will either play 1. e4 or 1. d4 in your life and will 100% face both.
5️⃣ The Mammoth Book of the World’s Greatest Games by Nunn and Emms
Honestly this can be replaced with any book that contains a games collection of master games.
You must get your feet wet and learn how the masters of the past and today play!
This will feed you an intuition and feel for the game!

1. d4 e5
Black immediately challenges White’s central control by offering a pawn. Unlike gambits in the Sicilian or King's Gambit, this gambit is generally considered unsound at the high level because White can easily gain an advantage with correct play.
Main Variations
1. Main Line (2. dxe5 Nc6 3. Nf3 Qe7)
Black tries to regain the pawn quickly with ...Nc6 and ...Qe7, aiming for rapid development and pressure on e5.
White can respond with 4. Qd5! attacking the knight and queen, gaining an early initiative.
