The “free almonds” of childhood were actually the seeds of this papdi tree. During summer vacations, many of us happily ate the seeds inside these papdi pods.
This tree is known by different names such as Vavla, Papdi, Chilbil, or Monkey Biscuit Tree. In English, it is called the Indian Elm, and its botanical name is Holoptelea integrifolia.
All parts of this tree are used in Ayurveda. Monkeys love eating its seeds, which is why it is called the Monkey Biscuit Tree.
The papdi tree grows tall and विशाल (huge), much like banyan and peepal trees. Its branches spread widely in different directions. In the Melghat and Chikhaldara region, edible oil is extracted from its seeds.
In the month of March, the tree gets covered with thin, papery fruits. At the same time, its fresh light-green (spring) leaves look very beautiful. The fruits are as thin as paper and contain a single seed in the center.
These seeds are carried far and high by the wind. Often in summer, you may find these seeds lying in your courtyard, even when the tree itself is not visible nearby.
These seeds can be easily planted to grow new saplings. 🌱
