TH“It’s because of your husband, huh?”
Addressing a question I get asked a lot—how did I learn Chinese? Where did I learn it? How long have I been studying it... etc etc.
AND NO it has **nothing** to do with my husband.
My husband is ethnically Chinese. And I emphasize “ethnically” because his native language is English. That’s what he mostly learned in school; that’s how he’s mostly communicated his entire life. And when we are together we always speak...English.
Yes, he speaks Mandarin (we are both bilingual) so that helps a lot with sharing cultural stuff, jokes, watching Chinese dramas, etc— but the bulk of my Chinese learning and speaking has been with ALL of the people I have interacted with (most of whom did not speak any English at all) during my 11+ (going on 12) years in China.
So, I beg of you...next time you see a fluent or proficient speaker of a language try not to assume it has anything to do with their partner. Plus, partners are not always the the best language teachers when it comes to learning a language. It’s much better to have a professionally trained teacher or tutor to supplement everything you learn outside of the classroom.

REIt is sensitive to directly say or send messages containing the word ”VPN“ on Chinese social media (your message or even account can be blocked, so be careful)! Instead, you can use ”翻墙软件“ or ”梯子“ to refer to a VPN when you need to talk about it, lol.
In Chinese, 翻墙 means ”to climb over the wall,“ and 梯子 means ”ladder.“

PEHow to learn Chinese?
Before I start, you need to know that staying in China doesn’t boost your language directly whether your are a beginner or at advanced level. We can get some vocabulary, but it’s nothing in front of the massive language combination.
For beginners, if you don’t spend some time sitting down, getting to recoginze the sound and tones, trying to pronunce them, the language environment can’t help you, can even poison you, make you frustrated.
I felt so frustrated when I learned Cambodian language. Before I started, I was confident because I already knew lots of amazing language learning methods like comprehensive input, TPRS, TPR, shadowing etc. And I could easily find local people to teach me. The reality is that I couldn’t remember anything I was told.
As I look back right now, I realize no.1 what I’m good at is doing association, not memorizing, and there is of course no foundation to do association at the very begining; no. 2 my ear wasn’t open for the language and so everything sounds similar to me.
So, to learn Chinese, the first step is to open up your ears and mouth, and better eyes for reading.
It took me half a year to prepare myself for Cambodian language, but I have prepared a much more efficient path for Chinese learning: 3 weeks.
The second step is to get effective comprehensive input from two directions: 1. listening and speaking 2. listening and reading.

I wanted to use this method to learn Cambodian language, but I just realized it was not an easy job to give effective input to a total beginner (I can do for Chinese learners). And remember you need at least 30mins each time to really get your brain into the target language mode.
I end up choosing listening and reading to learn Cambodian （easier for teachers). Because of this experience, I realize that reading is not as difficult as it looks like.
