“Sailing” is a soft rock song written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Christopher Cross.
The song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. In his Grammy acceptance speech, Cross acknowledged “Sailing” as his favorite song on the album and said that it was not originally meant to be a single.
In 2007, VH1 named “Sailing” the most “softsational soft rock” song of all time.
It was released in May 1980 as the second single from his first album Christopher Cross (1979), which was already certified Gold by this time. The song was a success in the United States, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 30, 1980.

MY SUMMER OF 1980 & THIS SONG….
It was the Summer of 1980. I was driving alone from Colorado to visit friends in Dallas. I stopped at a truck stop in Amarillo to take a break (I wasn’t in a truck). I couldn’t resist looking at their collection of new cassette tapes for sale. I found a new album on cassette by a brand new artist, Christopher Cross. And I couldn’t stop listening to it all the way through Texas, and back to California.
Cited as one of the most influential soft rock albums of the early 1980s, it won five GRAMMY Awards, including ALBUM OF THE YEAR, RECORD OF THE YEAR, SONG OF THE YEAR, and BEST NEW ARTIST, with Cross becoming the first artist to win the four major categories in the same year. 1980 - it was a very good year.

SOThis song is as close to musical therapy as anything I can think of. While sitting at the kitchen table in 1979, newly signed Warner Bros. artist, Christopher Cross, recalling the experience of sailing with a friend when he was a teenager, was noodling around on his acoustic, when words and melody began to flow…instantaneously. He calls it, “one of these mystical things”. “Sailing” basically appeared fully formed, except for the bridge, which took another year to flesh out.
Recorded in North Hollywood at Warner Brothers studios, for the self-titled album “Christopher Cross”, and produced by Michael Omartian, featured on the track were, Christopher Cross on vocals and 12-string electric guitar, Michael Omartian on piano and arrangements, Rob Meurer on electric piano, Andy Salmon on bass, Tommy Taylor on drums, and Victor Feldman on percussion. Released in 1980 as the second single, “Sailing” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and snagged three Grammy’s, including “Best Arrangement”. Fun fact: That orchestral intro at the top was an accident as a result of the two tape machines not syncing up properly when they pressed play. The album, in total, won five Grammy’s, with Cross sweeping all four general categories, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. During his acceptance speech, he stated that “Sailing”, his favorite song on the album, was not meant to be a single.
