Homeschooling with Classical Conversations Week #9 this week! 🏡 🫁 Loving this cycle 3 — We are studying the entire human body and focusing on specific body parts each week. We traced the outline of our bodies on chart paper and will piece together all the organs on the paper throughout the year. 🧮 We are finishing up skip counting this week with the 15s. We will move onto memorizing the squares next week. 🕰️ We are making our way through the entire timeline of the world. 🇺🇸 We have officially memorized 45 states and capitals as of this week! Homeschooling always makes me put my money where my mouth is! I KNEW this data before I had teens. I knew teens’ sleep rhythms changed, making them want to stay up later and sleep later. I knew it was normal. I knew it was expected. But actually letting my teen sleep in 😱 was a different story. Not getting up at 7 a.m. ?! Not getting started by 8 a.m. ?! Not finishing by lunch?! Not having morning time with all the kids together?! I had to let go of a lot of imagined expectations of what it should look like (and what other people would think) and embrace the reality of my teens’ sleep patterns once my oldest turned 13. I distinctly remember waking him up early one day and trying to push him through his work. His eyes were so tired and he kept nodding off. In a moment of clarity, I had a flashback to how tired I was during pregnancy. No amount of sleep or caffeine would have affected my need for sleep during that time because it was hormonal. It was developmental. It was normal. In that moment, I decided to finally put into action what I knew would be best for him. That’s not to say that I still don’t struggle with letting both of my teens have this alternate schedule during our school days. But it has led to less frustrating for me and more work getting done for them. And you know what? My son, who is now 17, slowly came out of those super late mornings and is getting up at a reasonable hour on his own. I was picking up my then 13 year old son from his haircut appointment. I had sent him in solo because I needed to wait in the car with two rambunctious preschoolers. When I went inside to pay, his hair stylist, Nick, said these words to me: ••• “He’s homeschooled, isn’t he?” ••• I nodded in affirmation. Nick continued, “I could tell. He’s the only teenager who will have a conversation with me while I’m cutting his hair. All of the other teenagers look at their phones the whole time. I love talking with him.” I was floored. All of those early concerns about “socialization”, all of my unpopular efforts to delay smart phones and social media - all of the decisions big and small were paying off. I have never forgotten Nick’s words that day. He had no idea what an encouragement he was to me. This will be our 2nd year in the program, and I am trying to simplify what I add in and making sure everything relates to what we are learning with the CC Cycle 2.  It really doesn’t take long. Their attention spans don’t last long. We all know that. John Taylor Gatto, a lifelong educator, states, “It only takes 50 contact hours to transmit basic literacy and math skills well enough that kids can be self-teachers from them on.” Think of all the time that could be spent outside of that doing things with your children. Creating memories. Enjoying nature. Instilling morals and values. I’m here to tell you, if you are concerned about time, it doesn’t take long. You CAN do it. This is the ONE thing that gets asked the most in regard to homeschooling. Not everyone has the same opportunities, but I’m so grateful for our homeschool community that we meet with on Mondays and other great events like this for our kids to be with their friends. Beyond that, they have youth night, retreats, sleepovers, time at the trampoline park, boating days….there’s no shortage of opportunities to hang with their friends. What are some other #homeschool assumptions that you have or that others have said to you?
