TEICYMI, from May 2026, the phone number linked to your BVN can only be changed once in a lifetime. This restriction is part of new safeguards introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria to reduce fraud risks in the country’s digital payments ecosystem, where mobile numbers are central to authentication and account recovery.
The new rules also allow banks to place a BVN on a temporary watchlist for up to 24 hours, pausing transactions while suspicious activity is verified.
