WISo why am I’m cold capping on my breast cancer journey? 🍒💪 And what the heck even is cold capping??
Cold capping is a method used during chemotherapy to help reduce hair loss. You wear a freezing cold cap (we’re talking -25°F to -40°F 🥶) for an extended period — starting 1 hour before chemo, continuing through the entire infusion (usually 3–4 hours), and then for 4 hours after chemo ends. It’s a full-day commitment. 😳
The extreme cold constricts blood vessels in your scalp, limiting how much chemo reaches the hair follicles. Less exposure = a better chance of keeping some hair.
And while it’s physically uncomfortable at first (think brain freeze on steroids), for me, it’s worth it — not just for my hair itself, but for what my hair represents.
Keeping your hair can help preserve a sense of dignity and identity during a time when everything else feels out of your control. When you don’t have the “bald cancer patient” look, people don’t automatically treat you like you’re sick — and that can be incredibly empowering. It helps you hold on to a piece of yourself in the midst of something that’s trying to take so much.
I’m using @arcticcoldcaps and while it’s not easy, I’m grateful this option exists. 💙 Plus I’m doing cold mits and booties on my hands and feet to avoid neuropathy. So it’s basically like one big 7 hour cold plunge. 🤣
