What happens when you pour too soon. 😭 Story time! While most of you are busy selling soaps at holiday markets, I've been working on what *should* be a simple tutorial on how to control trace (the rate that soap batter sets up) and recognize when the soap is ready to pour. Except it hasn't been simple!!! First recording went "fine" but there was some pertinent info that I forgot to include, so I thought I'd try it again. This is my second try. Definitely failed to recognize when it was ready to pour. On to my third try! Oh no. One color traced faster than the other two. Now I've failed to control trace! Tomorrow....yes, tomorrow I will be making my fourth attempt. I've learned something with every batch. For what it's worth, I will share my best practices that *usually* work. But it's still a chemical reaction with a variety of factors and sometimes they don't react as expected! This process — known as saponification — is what turns cold process soap into real soap. During saponification, oils react with lye and completely change structure, creating soap and naturally occurring glycerin that helps support skin hydration. Once the reaction is complete, no active lye remains — only a carefully crafted handmade soap bar. This is why cold process soapmaking is both an art and a science. Every batch teaches me something new about formulation, curing, and skin-loving ingredients. 🌿 Fresh & Earthy Soap Recipe Cold Process | 42 oz Loaf 🧴Oil Blend: • Lard – 714g (60%) • Coconut Oil – 298g (25%) • Avocado Oil – 178g (15%) 🧪 Lye Solution: • Distilled Water – 380g • Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) – 152g 🌿 Essential Oils: • Lemon – 10g • Tea Tree – 8g • Eucalyptus – 10g • Sandalwood – 8g 🧼 Instructions: 1. Wear gloves + goggles. 2. Mix lye into water. Cool to ~100–110°F. 3. Melt lard + coconut, then add avocado oil — bring oil mixture to 100-110°F. 4. Blend oils + lye to light trace (slightly thickened) 5. Add essential oils. Blend to trace (pudding consistency) 6. Pour into mold + tap to remove air bubbles. 7. Insulate for 24–48 hrs. Cut into bars then cure for 4–6 weeks. 💚 This bar smells like fresh air and earth — grounding, clean, and nourishing.
