WAWhen I heard that Te Pari had a new head bail to help with virtual collaring I was all over it. Being on a beef farm some of our cattle aren’t as tame as a nice dairy cow, it can be highly dangerous fitting our collars. Well how good is Te Pari coming up with a design to keep the cow safe and us farmers safe. Win win. Looking forward to giving it a go. Watch this space. Happy days job done.

AMMini tutorial of how I teach my students to collar. NOT with both hands (that is mostly illegal in my class! 🤩), but this way. Because it’s better 👍🏽💯💪🏽
However, there are methods earlier on in the process where two hand collaring is impressively effective—I have seen many great potters use two-hand collaring to start their pulling shape. But for making bottle necks, bringing in rims… i find this way much better.

ANIs it time to stop collaring wild wolves?
A grey wolf in Colorado died in January 2026 during a capture operation. The three-year-old breeding male from the King Mountain pack died from capture-related stress leading to acute cardiogenic shock while officials tried to fit a GPS collar.
Wolves are often chased by helicopter, darted, and collared so researchers can track their movements. Wildlife agencies say this data helps conservation — but deaths during capture do happen each year.
Critics argue wolves can now be monitored through genetics, camera traps, and other non-invasive methods. Some also warn that once pack locations are known, wolves can become easier to target in areas where hunting is allowed.
So the question being asked is:
Is collaring still necessary — or does it put wolves at risk?

CHELEPHANT COLLARING • It never seizes to amaze me as to how much goes into collaring just one Elephant. The work being done by @elephantsalive is extraordinary. And it takes a dedicated, professional team of experts, academics, scientists and researchers. The team isn't without the vet, the helicopter pilot, rangers, and community leaders who play an integral part of the outcome and work done by EA.
Allowing an opportunity for communities to step into an eco-system that not only protects and safeguards but more so educates communities to understand the importance of elephants within our eco-systems is critical to the imoact and outcome of such a collaring. And Elephants Alive inspires a new way of thinking, which means communities are able to re-look at how they can protect crops from being raded and ring fencing communities without harming elephants but ensuring the safety of the villages all at the same time.
EA have several remarkable projects including; "Crops for Living with Elephants" which I will share more about in a separate post.
Elephants Alive is the most powerful manner in which to protect Elephants, their habitats and simultaneously promote a harmonious coexistence which is not only possible but is a necessity that EA is making a reality.
It is an honour to work with Dr Michelle Henley, her formidable approach, understanding, passion and knowledge ensures the strength and ability for Elephants Alive to soar. This series will show you snow leopard research in a way you’ve never seen before.
