When we are working on language development, one of the really important skills we focus on are SEQUENCING skills - understanding what happens first, next, and last. Sequencing skills actually start to develop in the toddler years, around 2–3 years old, when children begin to understand simple routines and the order that things happen in, like first we wash our hands, then we eat. As children get older, around 4–5 years, they start to sequence events in stories and talk about what happened in order. Sequencing helps children organise information in their minds. When a child can look at different pieces of information and work out what comes first, what comes next, and what comes last, they’re learning how events fit together. This skill is really important for communication and storytelling. When we talk, we are constantly sequencing information, whether we are explaining what we did at school, telling a story, or describing how to do something. Using resources like these @blacksheeppress sequencing resource allow children to look at the pictures, think about the order of events, and practise putting that information together. This gives them the opportunity to process the information, organise their thoughts, and then narrate what’s happening, which is a really important step in developing stronger language and conversation skills. #languagedevelopment #childdevelopmentcenter #earlylanguagelearning #developmentallanguagedisorder #languagedelay

😱 We are often bombarded with stimuli. Text messages, cars speeding by, birds chirping, multiple conversations happening around us, advertisements and heaps of other things occurring at the same time. There is stimuli everywhere! Not to mention our internal thoughts and self-talk. How we manage to focus on anything is surprising in itself but we do. In varying degrees of efficiency, we have the ability to focus on what is important to us while blocking out other distractions (McLeod, 2018). ⠀ ⠀ 💬 For example, if your friend is telling you a story at a crowded restaurant, it is likely that you are blocking out multiple other conversations, music and cutlery clinking. You somehow manage to focus on your friend's story and do your best to dim down the rest. ⠀ 💭 Now think about your learning solutions. ⠀ ⠀ ❓ Do your learners experience distractions? Do they put effort into focusing on your solution and dimming down the rest? ⠀ ⠀ 🧠 “In psychology, selective attention is a process whereby the brain selectively filters out large amounts of sensory information in order to focus on just one message. When they pull the slider, the picture moves away, THIS disappears and THAT appears. Such a fun and visual way to practice grammar! My students love anything they can move and explore. We’re using random words on purpose 🎯 Generalisation isn’t about practising the same target words - it’s about being able to use the sound in ANY word. When children are making up a story, they’re focused on what they want to say… not the sound itself. 📚 For example: if the child gets the following words purse, pencil case, air freshener and they're working on 's' and 'k' they might tell the following story "one day I went into my bag and picked up my purse but it wasn't there, it was a pencil case instead! So I tried to find it but all I could find was my air freshener" - that's: 4 s sounds and 2 k sounds in a silly story! (Remember it's the sounds not the spelling) That means: ✔️ they’ll use words you haven’t practised ✔️ their target sound can pop up anywhere in the sentence (not just the generated words) And that’s exactly what we want!! As they’re talking, you’re adding a small visual cue with the Playdough when they miss their sound so they can start to recognise it, without stopping the flow of their story and it gives an opportunity for correction. You can also switch roles 👇 Make the same errors they do in your own story and see if they can spot them too. This builds self-monitoring which is what actually helps sounds carry over into real speech 🎉 #speechandlanguagetherapy #lowprepresources #speechsounds #slttips #speech
