RIWhite Mountain Apache and Comanche actor Jonathan Joss, most known for his roles as John Redcorn in “King of the Hill,” and as Chief Ken Hotate of the fictional Wamapoke tribe in NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” was murdered in a hate crime on Sunday, in San Antonio, Texas.
According to his husband, he was shot while checking the mail at the site of their former home. A home that was burned down, killing one of their dogs, after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told them they would set it on fire. The house was built by Joss’ father in 1957.
“Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic.” Joss’ husband wrote in a Facebook post.
Joss and his husband reported these threats to law enforcement many times and nothing was done. Joss’ family home, dog and then his life was stolen from him. Our hearts are with Joss’ husband and loved ones. You all deserved so much better. Joss, like so many others, should have lived a full, happy life.
The Stonewall Riots were a response to police brutality, and these systems still do not protect LGBTQ+ people. They remain a violent, oppressive force to our communities. They do not and have not ever protected us. Instead the police and the entire system and community failed Joss and his husband.
Pride is not a party that is cost prohibitive for most people in the community who need support, Pride is a PROTEST. Yes, show up in your joy, tip your Queens well, but remember that Pride is about showing up for our community who is not shown up for. 🫶🏽 Don’t forget your 🧱
