COThere is a mighty fine line between the Black Sidekick Trope in Comics and the Magical Negro Tropes in comics although its not so easy to see all the time. Both tropes tend to portray a black character acts as an adviser to a more prominent character that tends to be white

The difference I see between them is the frequency of being an adviser, the way they help and the actual “class” relationship they have to the main hero. Typically black sidekicks are portrayed as second fiddle “buddies” who sometimes give moral/emotional support but don’t have the same “umph” as the hero although similar. This is seen in the case of characters like War Machine, Sam Wilson and Diggle (Ollie’s best friend) who are all similar to and best friends to their main hero.

The Magical Negro tends to be somewhat removed from the hero almost in some cases to a point of transcended being human like a godsend.Nick Fury tends to be a “beacon of wisdom” constantly when shit hits the fan for the white Marvel Heros. He’s a one size fix all negro for the MCU with no powers but all the mouth cash in world to help get shit right again. The moral of the story is both tropes have similar things in common. they allow the YT to check off a diversity box and they both have submissive negroes used as tools to help the white characters succeed.
