No turning. No hauling. No waiting months for a pile to “finish.” Now I have ready-to-use compost in weeks. This is what changed everything for me: When food scraps go straight into the soil, they break down where the microbes, worms, and roots already live. The soil does the work. I just… get out of the way. I dig a small hole. I bury the scraps. I cover it back up. And I move on with my life. No smells. No pests. No half-rotted pile freezing all winter. Just richer soil, healthier plants, and beds that literally feed themselves. This is composting without the middleman. This is soil building in real time. This is what low-effort gardening actually looks like. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by compost rules, bins, ratios, or timelines, you’re not doing it wrong. You were just taught the hardest version first. I break down exactly how I do this, what I bury, where I bury it, and how it works in real backyard gardens. Comment COMPOST

🌱 This is the easiest way to enrich your garden soil without needing a messy, smelly bin. 🪱 You simply bury your kitchen scraps and let the earthworms do all the hard work right where your plants need it. 🪴 Here are the essential tips for a perfect compost trench. ⛏️ Dig your trench deep, aiming for 12 to 18 inches. 🔪 Chop your veggie scraps small so they decompose much faster. 🍂 Mix in some dry leaves or shredded cardboard to balance the moisture. 🚫 Keep meat, dairy, and oils completely out to avoid attracting pests. 🔄 Move your trench location every year to spread the rich nutrients all around your garden. 💦 Always water the open trench well before covering it back up with thick soil.

I had over a dozen viral Reels this year and most of them were my signature garden hacks 🌱 This little compost trick is one I use all the time. I have three of these small-but-mighty composters tucked into my beds, and I love seeing so many of you trying it too. It’s as simple as an upcycled pasta strainer and a thrifted lid. Add kitchen scraps, let nature do its thing, and you’re feeding your soil right where it’s needed. Work smarter, not harder? Yes, please! I’ve got lots more home and garden hacks coming in 2026, and you won’t want to miss them 💚 🌸Erin

Composting 🪱 Home composting is one of the standout BEST things I do for my garden and for the environment: to reduce food waste, make gardening cheaper, and help my plants thrive. I first started composting about 10 years ago and I’ve learnt SO much in that time (like the rest of gardening, it’s all trial and error). And turning things I might otherwise throw away into something incredible I can use in the garden never grows old! I’m actually a little bit obsessed. What goes in my composter: 🥔 Food waste/kitchen scraps 🪴 Garden waste: prunings, deadheads, twigs 🍂 Leaves 🫖 Tea bags ☕️ Coffee grounds (I collect these from a local supermarket) 🥚 Egg shells 🏷️ Cardboard 📝 Brown paper This produces me an amazing homegrown compost that I can use as a mulch, as a potting mix or to start off my seedlings. This helps me to: 🥦 Reduce food waste 💧 Lock in soil moisture 🪱 Improve soil structure 🚀 Supercharge plant growth naturally ♻️ Close the food loop 💰 Save money Basically I’m able to regenerate my soil and create NEW food and flowers from all the other ones I put into the compost bin (that would otherwise go in a waste bin!)! Isn’t that amazing?! 🤩 The hot bin is one of three composting solutions I have in the garden. I also have a conventional plastic composter, an a bokashi bin which breaks down food waste and creates me a nutritious plant feed (the hot bin also creates a feed for me!). There’s honestly a solution for all spaces. #Compost #Composting #ReduceReuseRecycle #ZeroWaste #SustainableGardening

Strawberry Tower Hack 🍓 (Big Harvest, Tiny Space) Stacked pots = a strawberry tower that saves space, keeps fruit cleaner, and makes picking easy. STEPS: Place the biggest pot in a sunny spot (6+ hrs). Add drainage + fill with compost. Center the medium pot on top, pack soil around it, fill it. Add the small pot on top, pack soil around it, fill it. Plant strawberries around the edges (keep crowns at soil level). Water from the top and keep soil moist. Feed every 2 weeks and enjoy the harvest! 🍓

🥔Potatoes from a laundry basket? Yes. Even if you don’t have a garden, how fun would this be for your family to do?! Here’s how: 🗑️ These laundry baskets are from Walmart (best price I’ve found for this type anywhere- ✨linked in profile) • Compost (3-4 bags needed for 2 baskets) also found cheapest at Walmart (✨linked) • Straw can be found at Tractor Supply or any rural lifestyle retailer for same-day pickup. 🥔 Seed potatoes can be found at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Tractor Supply (where I got mine), or again, any rural lifestyle retailer. 🥔Small potatoes can be left as is. Larger potatoes can be cut into smaller pieces (each with an eye/those spikes you see coming out of the potatoes). Why we cut them: Think of it like each eye having its own pantry of food versus having to compete with neighboring eyes for the same resource. 🌫️Let them callus/dry over for 1-2 days before planting to prevent rotting. 🪛Drill a few holes at the bottom of the basket and around the bottom edge. 🥪Layering: • Start with 3–4 inches of straw • Add 2–3 inches of compost • Place seed potatoes (eyes up), or whole potatoes if small • Repeat layers of straw → compost → potatoes • Fill the basket all the way up • Finish with a top layer of compost ☀️ Put out in full sun (6-8+ hours daily) 💧 Watering: • After planting: every 3–5 days (lightly) • Once growing: every 2–3 days • Straw holds moisture—don’t overwater! • Hot weather = check daily (water when top feels dry), you want the moisture to be like a wrung out sponge. 🌼 When to harvest: • When plants turn yellow + die back, about 90-120 days, wait 1–2 weeks, then lift or dump the basket and collect 🥔 ✨ Tip: Stop watering 1–2 weeks before harvest so skins toughen! #potatoes #gardening #hack #backyard #plants

❗️Money-saving tip‼️ To make large pots cost effective I use top soil collected from the mole hills and only half of the pot is filled with compost. I make my own sweet pea obelisk using pruned branches and I use twine to connect them. If you haven’t got any branches, in my third book, The Money-Saving Gardener Containers I listed useful websites where you can buy them most cost-effectively and environmentally frinedly. More useful details about this project are in my third book, The MOney-Saving Gardener Containers on page 134-135 Pot dimension: 47 cm high, diameter 53 cm

Are your veggie beds and flower beds ready for the growing season? Or are they covered in weeds? The best way to prepare your beds is to cover them with some recycled cardboard followed by about 5 to 10cm of compost. This is the no-dig method of gardening. Avoid digging over the soil in your flower and vegetable beds as this will increase the amount of weeds. It will bring dormant weed seed to near the surface where they are more likely to germinate. And if your spade slices through a perennial weed root it will propagate it and multiply profusely. Digging the soil will also destroy your soil structure. No-dig retains the soil structure and therefore preserves essential microbes and fungi as well as improving drainage and increasing water retention during dry periods. This means less watering is needed. Best of all, no-dig means far less chance of hurting your back. It saves a lot of unnecessary work! Placing cardboard and compost over the weeds will place the weeds in darkness and hopefully smother them out. Any weeds that still grow through can be pulled out of the compost easily. However, I would still recommend digging out very persistent perennial weeds such as ground elder, horsetail and bindweed. This was filmed in the beautiful gardens at Torre Abbey in Devon where I run my gardening courses for beginners. Simon Akeroyd’s Gardening Academy is based at Torre Abbey in Torquay on the beautiful English Riviera. Worm composting directly in the garden bed simplifies vermicomposting. Want to learn more? Comment "GUIDE," and I’ll send you a link to these bins and my resources on how to do it. This includes guides on getting started and feeding worms, along with an extensive FAQ to help you understand the process. If you live in the low desert, now is the perfect time to add them to your beds. In-bed vermicomposting solves the problem of what to do with worms during extreme hot and cold. For example, vermicomposting in hot-weather areas like the low desert of Arizona is difficult unless you bring the worms inside during the summer months. With in-bed vermicomposting, the worms burrow deeper in the beds during the heat of an Arizona summer and then emerge again in the fall. Worm castings in the garden help plants grow larger and stronger. They also get more and better-quality flowers, fruit, and vegetables. It can also increase a plant’s resilience to pests, drought, heat, disease, and other stress. #vermicompost #wormcastings #inbedvermicomposting #redwigglers #compost
