Would you be prefer to be composted? Human composting might sound strange but it provides an environmentally friendly funeral option that gives back to the earth. So how exactly does human composting work? A body is put into a closed vessel with materials such as wood chips, alfalfa and straw to speed up the process of decomposition by optimising the environment for microbes to thrive. In one or two months, the body will have been broken down into soil ready to bring new life into the world. This soil is given to loved ones who can use use it plant a tree in memory, or donate it to a meaningful conservation project Many modern funeral practices have a really high environmental impact. For example, being cremated releases 400kg of CO2 into the atmosphere and traditional burials involving a coffin consume wood, land and other natural resources. So human composting can be an environmentally friendly alternative that also gives back to the planet, and due to an increasing demand it’s becoming legalised across the world. What do you think? Slugs are such an issue in my vegetable garden due to the damp climate here, and ducks really help to keep them under control. Luckily with the dry spring we’ve had, slugs haven’t been as much of a problem this year (last year was pretty awful though). The ducks also provide me with fresh eggs, and a really nutritious compost for my garden. 🪵 Step 1: Dig & Lay the Foundation - Excavate a pit directly into the earth. Start with a base layer of well-aged logs, especially those already showing signs of fungal life. These support fungal networks, help trap carbon & provide long-term aeration as they slowly break down. 🍂Step 2: Build Nutrient-Rich Layers - Layer carbon-rich materials with nitrogen-rich inputs. Add rock dusts or mineral powders for extra trace nutrients. The more diversity here, the more resilient your microbial ecosystem becomes. 💩 Step 3: Seal with Living Soil - Top the whole pile with a generous layer of healthy topsoil. This becomes your planting surface & helps stabilise the system. 🌀 Step 4: Prepare Biodynamic Compost Inoculant balls- Enclose each of the biodynamic preparations in mature composted soil. These preparations are potentised minerals made from chamomile, yarrow, oak bark, dandelion & nettle. Shape the mixture into fist-sized balls, which become powerhouses of microbial life. 🪱 Step 5: Activate the Heap - Use a stick to poke evenly spaced holes in the mound. Place an inoculant ball into each one & cover it with soil to awaken microbial activity deep within the pile. 🥬 Step 6: Plant the Abundance - Plant seedlings directly into the topsoil. As the buried organic matter decomposes, it steadily feeds their roots. The microbial warmth also supports winter growth & encourages strong root development. 🛡️ Step 7: Protect the System - Cover your bed with breathable materials like wire mesh or netting to deter animals while allowing air & water to flow freely. This weekend, I had the great pleasure of attending a biodynamic compost workshop with Sandra Frain from @wisewayswork. What she shared wasn’t just a method, it was a way of seeing compost as a living, breathing ecosystem. Rooted in over 100 years of biodynamic practice & thousands of years of Indigenous ecological knowledge, this bed is as much about regeneration as it is about growing food.
