“Do you get to pet and cuddle them?” This is a question I often receive from visitors at the wildlife center, and even here online at times. I usually just laugh it off and say no, but today I’d like to give a more thorough answer. Generally speaking, birds—wild or not—are not particularly fond of being touched. Of course, this isn’t true for all species, with those who regularly engage in intraspecific (and/or interspecific) allopreening being more open to physical affection; but even for these birds, tolerance varies between individuals. Vultures are highly social, and allopreening (mainly intraspecific, but also sometimes interspecific) is common for them; this behavior helps establish bonds between mates, parents and their offspring, etc.. In captivity, vultures may seek out head scratches from their keepers, rub their faces and beaks against our hands, stand on our laps, and even try to preen our hair. Again, however, the level of physical interaction, and tolerance of it, varies between species AND individuals. Vultures who were raised in captivity are also more likely to engage in these behaviors, whereas those who grew up in the wild prefer to keep a distance. The vultures I work with are almost all formerly wild-living birds who sustained injuries that left them permanently disabled (and thus non-releasable). Two of them grew up in the wild, interacting with other vultures and avoiding humans. While they recognize individual keepers like myself and can grow tolerant of my presence, even approaching me for food, they generally avoid physical contact. Princess is the exception, and that’s mainly because she was brought to the center as a very young bird, and so grew up living in captivity. Personal space is a myth for her, and her form of “affection,” or play behavior, involves untying shoe laces, pulling on clothes, following me around, and standing on my lap when I sit down. Even so, Princess is not a fan of being touched, either, and most physical interactions between us are initiated by her, as is evident in this video.

This California condor “dance” is a common courtship display that typically males, but also some females, perform during breeding season in the winter and early spring! Why the fence, you ask? Condors are trapped yearly and temporarily held in large flight pens so that biologists can replace their tags and transmitters, conduct health checks, take samples for research, and give vaccinations as needed. On another note, what’s your go to move on the dance floor? #intheclerbweallfam #refugeweek2024 Footage taken at Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge in California of a condor performing a courtship display to another condor in a holding pen by Stephanie Herrera/USFWS, text reads “when your song comes on in the club” over the condors, reel by Rebecca Fabbri/USFWS #californiacondor #hoppermountainnationalwildliferefuge #nationalwildliferefuge #conservation

This week our Sumamos team attended various animals at three zoos that all had Andean condors (Vultur gryphus) in captivity. The Andean condor, a majestic symbol of the high Andes, faces significant challenges in Peru and across its range. Current estimates suggest fewer than 250 individuals remain in the wild in Peru, with numbers continuing to decline due to various threats. Key conservation issues include habitat loss due to land conversion for agriculture, human encroachment, and environmental contamination, particularly from lead poisoning from ingested spent ammunition. Additionally, condors are often victims of retaliatory poisoning intended for predatory mammals, posing a severe threat to their survival. The challenges of keeping Andean condors in captivity are profound; these birds have intricate social structures, require vast spaces for flight, and are susceptible to stress and health issues when confined. Successful breeding programs demand highly specialized care and large enclosures that mimic their natural environment, making conservation efforts in captivity both logistically and financially demanding. All of the condors in this video, and hundreds more in captivity, will never fly free. What do you think — should @hojanueva start a condor breeding and reintroduction program? Raise your hand in the comments 🙌🦅🫶 #condor #andeancondor #wildliferescue #rewilding

From a Valentine’s Day rescue to a second chance at life on Earth Day! 🌍 In the last 46 years, only nine injured Andean Condors have been able to return to their natural habitat in Ecuador, where fewer than 150 wild Andean Condors remain. Valentino is now one of them. Male Andean Condor, Valentino, was found injured in the wild on February 14th by researchers from our Ecuadorian sister zoo, @bioparqueamaru. He had been shot many times and could not fly. While his situation was dire, the health planning of his quickly assembled care team was strong. After more than two months of rehabilitation and countless treatments, many of which were learned through collaborative efforts with the National Aviary, Valentino flew in the wild once more on April 22nd. Valentino was successfully released in Cajas National Park, in an area carefully selected to promote his survival and adaptation. With this release, Valentino is the 23rd Andean Condor to be tagged, with a satellite tracker provided by the National Aviary, in Ecuador, which will share previously uncollected data from a southern section of Ecuador directly with researchers. The National Aviary is a proud supporter of Bioparque Amaru, and we are incredibly grateful to have contributed to Valentino’s rehabilitation and return to his natural habitat. Vuela Valentino Vuela! What an incredible welcome to Patagonia. After spending time further south with the penguins, we’ve come a bit north and today we were rewarded with an unforgettable encounter with Andean Condors. Up on a cliff, these giants soared past us, sometimes so close we could hear the wind whistling in their wings. With a wingspan of 3.3 meters (over 10 feet) and weighing up to 15 kilograms, their size is just unbelievable. Watching them glide and circle, clearly curious about us, was something truly special. An epic start to this next stretch of the journey as we make our way toward Torres del Paine and hopefully some time with Pumas ahead. 🤞 #andeancondor #patagonia #chile #wildlifephotography #condor #torresdelpaine #wildlifeexperience #naturelovers
