Nature has a way of making the deadly so enticing. The banded marble cone is one of the three Hawaiian cone shells with venom that can be fatal to humans. 🐚 Empty shells only. While the mollusks that make these shells are venomous and (while rare) can sting you, their shells are not poisonous to the touch. I exercise caution when handling the shells to ensure they are empty. There are many signs that indicate a shell is empty including most commonly that it is surf tumbled and has rocks in its opening (as shown in this video). This may not always be visible from the camera angles, but I am certain each shell is empty before I put them in my bag. The reason is one, you're not likely to come across a live one, and two, they tend to be shy creatures that retract into their shells when afraid. . The only time I've come across live cones is after big storms, and you can see I quickly check to see if the mollusk is alive, and quickly place it back 👍🏻 . Always pick these up from the top part of the shell if you're unsure. They can sting, but the cone snails we have here in Florida are not deadly like some of the species you've likely heard about. .
