To support this, you want activities that build shoulder stability, hand strength, finger control, and visual–motor coordination. ✅ Pre-Writing Skills to Practice 1️⃣ Gross Motor & Shoulder Stability These build the foundation for controlled hand movement. Wall scribbling on big paper Vertical chalkboard drawing Painting on an easel 👉 Vertical surfaces naturally improve wrist position and control. 2️⃣ Fine Motor Strength Activities that strengthen fingers, wrist, and grip: Playdough pinching, rolling, squeezing Tearing paper Using tongs, droppers, pipettes Threading big beads Opening & closing cloth clips Transferring pom-poms with tweezer. 👉 Strong fingers = better pencil control. 3️⃣ Hand–Eye Coordination These teach the child to guide their hand intentionally: Dot-to-dot with stickers Copying simple patterns (line → dot → circle) Peg puzzles Lacing cards Tracing roads with toy cars 4️⃣ Bilateral Coordination Using both hands together improves stability. How child’s writing changes over time? 👶 Random Scribbling: 15 months to 2 years 👶 Controlled Scribbling: 2 years to 3 years 👶 Lines & Patterns: 2.5 years to 3.5 years 👶 Pictures of objects/people: 3 years to 5 years 👶 Letters or Words practice: 3 years to 5 years What type of tools/techniques are best in the beginning? 🖍️Rounder & Shorter tools 🖍️Very thick crayons/chalks 🖍️Triangular/Bulb shaped brushes/chalks 🖍️Finger Painting ✨Scrapping images in soil/sand using fingers or sticks ✨Using chalks ✨Painting using water on the floor/pavement Please See: ✳️In the video my baby is using regular size color pens. But it is not something that I forced him to use. He wanted to use it on his own and was enjoying coloring on the glow board. ✳️I usually encourage him to use thick sized brushes (which are easy on the grip), thick crayons on paper whenever he wants to scribble or paint. ✳️Also, I don’t force/guide him to hold any tool in any particular way at this age & stage. It is completely upto his choice and convenience. His hand muscles are still developing so shifting and switching from one stage of pencil grasp to another. Save it for later.
