When we brought home our first chicks, we had a little store bought coop. The quick assembly coop that comes in a box. Back then they made these store-bought coops a little bigger than they do now, so it worked for a few years.
Then the roof started caving in.
I went on the search for a new coop and found they were all SO SMALL! To make it worse, the capacity rating on the box was way higher than it should be 😢
If there is one piece of advice I can give when coop shopping:
PLEASE make sure you build/buy a setup that is big enough for your flock. Do some research and do not just rely on the manufacturer suggestions.
You’ll want at least 10sqft per chicken in the run, and even more if this is their only living space.
Inside the coop you will want to ensure 12” of roosting space per chicken and 1 nesting box for every 4 chickens.
I made sure to provide accurate capacity ratings for each of our coop building plans (which you will find in the listing).

EMI only clean my chicken coops about every 5–6 months… and they still don’t smell.
And….
No flies.
No bugs.
No moisture.
This is the only system I use: diatomaceous earth and pine pellets.
After a clean-out I sprinkle a thin layer of DE on the floor, then scatter pine pellets over the whole coop…heavier under the roost bars where most of the poop happens.
The pellets absorb moisture and break down slowly, and the DE keeps insects from moving in. Because everything stays dry, it composts in place instead of rotting.
I have two coops and a clean-out takes me about 15 minutes each because it comes out in dry clumps instead of wet muck.
Simple. Cheap. Low effort.
And my coop never smells like a coop.
