I spotted this beautiful Cowry shell in its natural habitat… not washed up on the beach, not polished, not lifeless—but alive. 🐚✨ Most people only ever see cowries as souvenirs, jewellery, or decorations… but what many don’t realise is that these shells belong to a living sea snail. And when they’re alive, they look completely different. At night, the cowry extends a soft, fleshy mantle that actually covers the entire shell—keeping it polished, smooth, and protected from algae and damage. That glossy, perfect shine? That’s not luck… it’s maintenance. Unfortunately, because cowry shells are so beautiful and popular, they’re often collected in huge numbers by beachgoers. The problem is, many are taken while the animal is still alive or before the ecosystem can replace them. Over time, this can reduce local populations and disrupt reef balance. Seeing one like this—alive, undisturbed, and exactly where it belongs—is something special. It’s a reminder that the ocean isn’t a souvenir shop… it’s a living world. Fun Facts 🐚 • Cowries were once used as currency in parts of Africa and Asia • Their shells are naturally polished by their own body • Most species are nocturnal and hide during the day • Some cowries can release chemicals to deter predators • There are over 200 different species of cowries worldwide Hashtags: #CowryShell #MarineLife #OceanConservation #Mauritius #UnderwaterWorld Keywords: cowry shell facts, living cowry shell, marine snail shell, ocean conservation Mauritius, reef ecosystem importance

European Cowrie - Trivia monacha The Shetland name for the shells is Groatie Buckie and we just love that. Some beaches up here are sprinkled with them, so make sure you look for them on your next beach walk. We prefer to find the live animal though. The sea snails are just amazing and we are very lucky to find them on many of our Safaris. Watching them emerge from their shells and slide along hunting for a tasty sea squirt is a real highlight. #Cowrie #Shell #Nature #Rockpool #Shetland

Sand dollars are flat, burrowing sea urchins (order Clypeasteroida) belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, making them relatives of starfish and sea cucumbers. They live on sandy ocean floors, using tiny spines to move, burrow, and feed on algae and organic detritus. When alive, they are purple, brown, or green; the white "shells" found on beaches are their sun-bleached skeletons (or "tests")
