KIDid you know Blur’s “Song 2” started as an inside joke meant to troll their record label?
Originally, Damon Albarn recorded a slow acoustic demo, whistling the now-iconic “woo-hoo” hook. Guitarist Graham Coxon suggested cranking the tempo, playing as loud and rough as possible, and then pitching it to the label as a single “to blow their heads off.” They expected rejection—but executives loved it, and the song became one of Blur’s biggest hits. What began as a parody of over-the-top rock anthems ended up defining Britpop’s chaotic, playful edge for an entire generation.

According to Graham Coxon, “Song 2” was intended to be a joke on the record company. Damon Albarn had recorded an acoustic demo of the song which was slower and contained the song’s distinctive “woo-hoo” chorus in whistle form. Coxon then suggested that they pump up the speed and perform the song loudly, with Coxon deliberately seeking out an amateurish guitar sound. From there, Coxon told Albarn to tell the record company that they wanted to release the song as a single to “blow the flipping record labels’ heads off”. To Coxon’s surprise, record executives reacted positively. When asked if the band had any idea of the song’s commercial appeal, Coxon replied, “We’d just thought it was way too extreme”.

NS📣 New research alert (just published)!
White sharks have been a bit of an enigma 😎 but thanks to collaborative research project between Dr Paul Butcher (@nsw_dpi scientist) and researchers from @deakinuniversity (Dr Justin Rizzari and honours student Jess Coxon) we are learning more every day!
In May 2021, three sharks 🦈🦈🦈 were fitted with satellite tags, from May 2021 to January 2022.
These tags recorded their movements along the coastline, as well as water depth and temperature.
What did we learn? 🧐
🦈 Sharks like to travel!
🦈 All three sharks moved away from the coast after being tagged. This supports our SMART drumline research findings between 2015-2020.
🦈 They moved north-south, hanging out in some locations a little longer, but travelling
thousands of kms.
🦈 They preferred cooler water temperatures between 14-19 degrees (Celsius), cruising deeper waters during the day and moving into shallower waters at night.
🦈 They also spend most of their time in the <50m from the surface zone.
In the coming weeks, we will share each shark’s journey – and like us – they are all unique.

AB“Yep that is a Great white!” 🦈
Dylan Coxon was fishing around 10 kilometres off the coast of Robe, South Australia when his mates and he spotted a Great white shark swimming around the fishing boat, before swimming away.
“The shark was just really peaceful and I doubt you would really want to annoy it, but it was really nice just cruising around and it was a good experience.” The close encounter has not put Mr Coxon off hitting the water — instead, he headed out to go diving the morning after the encounter.
He said he respected the ocean was the shark’s home.
