Local reports say the homeowners believe the animal likely wandered in during a gravel delivery years earlier and was unknowingly trapped when the floor was tiled over. When workers broke through the concrete, the tortoise slowly emerged, alive and alert. Wildlife officials identified it as a yellow-footed tortoise, a native species known for its extremely slow metabolism.
