The four smaller crosses represent the four Evangelists—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They symbolise the Gospel piercing the four corners of the earth. It is the Great Commission in visual form. 3. The Spirit is Warrior. This is the ancient symbol of the Crusades. It represents the defence of the Holy Land and the True Kingdom of Heaven under the absolute rule of Jesus the King. It reminds us that we are not called to be passive; we are called to reclaim territory for the Truth. We wear this cross because we are His soldiers. Remembered as the Leper King, he ascended the throne of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1174 at only thirteen years of age: Born in 1161, son of King Amalric I of Jerusalem, he showed signs of leprosy in early childhood—specifically the aggressive lepromatous form The famous chronicler William of Tyre describes how young Baldwin felt no pain when injured while playing, an early and ominous sign of the disease that would define his life. Due to his age, the kingdom was initially governed under the regency of Raymond III of Tripoli, but it soon became clear that Baldwin was no ceremonial ruler: he was intelligent, observant, and politically sharp As his body weakened, the world around him grew more dangerous. The greatest external threat came from Saladin, the unifier of the Muslim world and one of the most formidable commanders of the medieval era. #Despite progressive paralysis, blindness, and severe deformities, Baldwin continued to ride into battle and command his armies In 1177, against all odds, he achieved a stunning victory over Saladin at the Battle of Montgisard—one of the most improbable triumphs of the Crusader period. He died in 1185 at just twenty-four years of age, after eleven years on the throne. With his death, the Kingdom of Jerusalem rapidly collapsed, leading to the fall of the Holy City only two years later.
