Originating in what is now Iraq before 3200 BC, cuneiform script is, as far as we know, the oldest form of writing in the world. The recording of a spoken language, emerged from earlier recording systems at the end of the 4th Millennium BC. The first written language in Mesopotamia is called Sumerian. Most of early tablets come from the site of Uruk, in southern Mesopotamia, and it may have been here that this form of writing was invented. Cuneiform is one of the oldest forms of writing known. It means "wedge-shaped," because people wrote it using a reed stylus cut to make a wedge-shaped mark on a clay tablet. Letters enclosed in clay envelopes, as well as works of literature, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh have been found. Historical accounts have also come to light, as have huge libraries such as that belonging to Assyrian king, Ashurbanipal. Cuneiform writing was used to record a variety of information such as temple activities, business and trade. Cuneiform was also used to write stories, myths, and personal letters. The latest known example of cuneiform is an astronomical text from 75 CE. During its 3000-year history, cuneiform was used to write around 15 different languages including Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Elamite, Hittite, Urartian, and Old Persian. First developed by scribes as a book-keeping tool to keep track of bread and beer rations in ancient cities like Uruk (in south east of modern-day Iraq), system soon spread across Middle East and was used continuously for more than 3000 years, up until 1st Century AD. Cuneiform is not a language but a proper way of writing distinct from the alphabet. It doesn't have 'letters' – instead it uses between 600-1000 characters impressed on clay to spell words by dividing them up into syllables, like 'ca-at' for cat, or 'mu-zi-um' for museum. Other signs stood for whole words, like our '£' standing for pound sterling. 🎥 : Credit to the Owner © British Museum #archaeohistories #cuneiform #claytablets #reels #mesopotamia #history #facts #reel #ancienthistory #writing #britishmuseum

Ea-Nasir was a Bronze Age copper merchant from Ur, infamous as the subject of the world's oldest known customer complaint, a cuneiform tablet from around 1750 BCE where a customer named Nanni details receiving substandard copper and being treated rudely by Ea-Nasir's servant. Despite his poor reputation from these tablets, indicating repeated issues with quality and service, he became an internet meme due to the relatable frustrations captured in the ancient correspondence, which details Nanni's anger over bad ingots and poor treatment.   Who He Was A Merchant: Ea-Nasir traded copper from Magan (modern Oman) to Mesopotamia through the merchant guild "Alik Tilmun" (Dilmun Traders).  Active Around 1750 BCE: He was a contemporary of the Larsa ruler Rim-Sin I.  The Famous Complaint  Sender:  A customer named Nanni.  Content:  Nanni complained that Ea-Nasir provided bad quality copper ingots and insulted his messenger, refusing a proper exchange.  Key Quote (from Nanni):  "You left them but you did not do what you promised me, you put inots which were not good before my messenger and said, if you want to take them, take them. If you do not want to take them, go away".  More Tablets:  Other tablets found in Ea-Nasir's house also show complaints from others about poor copper quality and unmet promises, solidifying his reputation as a bad businessman.  Modern Fame Internet Meme:  In 2015, the tablet gained traction online, turning Ea-Nasir into a symbol for bad customer service, with people relating to Nanni's ancient frustrations.  Historical Significance:  The tablets provide unique insight into business practices, trade, and customer complaints in ancient Sumer.  #eanasir #memes #explore #historymemes #funny

Cuneiform is one of the earliest systems of writing, developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia around 3400 BC. The name “cuneiform” comes from the Latin word “cuneus,” meaning “wedge,” due to the wedge-shaped marks made by pressing a stylus into clay tablets. This writing system started as pictographs but evolved into abstract symbols representing sounds, words, or ideas. Cuneiform was initially used for record-keeping, such as tracking goods and resources, but it eventually expanded to include literature, legal codes, and administrative documents. It was employed by several cultures over thousands of years, including the Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Hittites. The script was versatile, used to write in various languages, including Sumerian, Akkadian, and Hittite. It remained in use until the early centuries of the Common Era when alphabetic scripts became more prevalent. The deciphering of cuneiform in the 19th century was a monumental achievement in archaeology, opening up vast amounts of ancient knowledge and history. 🎥: @cuneiforming on X #reels #history #mystery #ancient #art #archaeology

Although no published translations exist for this clay tablet on display in the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge, the stylistic arrangement of cuneiform symbols on it show that this is an ancient account. It dates back to Ur III , circa 2112-2004 BCE and contains a Sumerian inscription most likely showcasing numbers that built a kingdom. It comes from Umma or the modern Tel Jokha in Iraq. #speakingarchaeologically #citizenarchaeology #mesopotamianarchaeology #ancientiraq #iraqiarchaeology

🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️ 🇬🇧 The invention of writing dates back to about  3200 BC and belongs to the Sumerians, an ancient people of Mesopotamia. This invention sanctions the passage from prehistory to history. The introduction of writing made it possible to effectively manage issues of an administrative nature, such as the keeping of accounts, business management, as well as to pass on those traditions that until then had always been transmitted orally, with particular reference to the magical ones / religious. The most used support were the clay tablets made with materials readily available in the area. The tablets, still soft, were engraved with styles, that is thin reeds that were cut obliquely and that allowed the tablets to be drawn with remarkable precision. Once engraved, the tablets were dried in order to give them greater solidity. 🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️ 📹 Video via @opeerapat 🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️ #akkadian #cuneiform #cuneiforme #sumeri #mesopotamia #babilonia #claytablets #sumerian #babylonian #ancientworld #ancienthistory #archeology #history
