💻 NO BIG DATA ON A DEAD PLANET Last week, the @washingtonpost published an article entitled “AI is exhausting the power grid. Tech firms are seeking a miracle solution”. In the article, they documented in detail how AI and the infrastructure it depends on – like data centres – are major causes for environmental concern. There are three big issues that data centres pose. ⚡️ ENERGY Data Centres consume up to 2% of the world’s electricity demands. The @washingtonpost article detailed how one large data center complex in Iowa owned by Meta burns the annual equivalent amount of power as 7 million [laptops](https://www.siliconvalleypower.com/residents/save-energy/appliance-energy-use-chart) running eight hours every day. 💧 WATER The average data center [uses as much water as three average-sized hospitals](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41545-021-00101-w) (Mytton, 2021) and we have seen how this usage threatens already vulnerable communities facing water scarcity. Luckily, the project planned in Cerillos, Chile, has not yet been fully approved thanks to he campaigning of local residents! 🌱 LAND Data Centres are massive and require vast swatches of land, both for the facilities themselves and for the energy projects they require to power them. In the Netherlands, there are conflicts over the developmennt of data centres and the noise, light and pollution they will bring to their surroundings lands. *** Big Tech advocates argue that the AI innovations that rely on data centres are contributing to a greener world, for example AI technologies that reduce grid consumption. They also assure us that green energy breakthroughs, such as nuclear fission, are just over the horizon and will cancel out any possible harms, but without taking seriously environmental justice concerns, the growth of Big Data will continue to harm people and planet.
