The whale DOES NOT end up exploding in this particular video, sorry to disappoint.
Wildlife officials will often intentionally cut holes in whale carcasses in order to ventilate them. Prolonged gas build up from decomposition can cause whale carcasses to literally explode. Freeing up some of these gases helps to prevent a large, definently stinky, and potentially dangerous explosion.

NEThis is so sad - Grieving mother orca whale carried her dead calf for more than 24 hours 🐳😭
She had just given birth, following a nearly year-and-a-half-long gestation period. It was her second offspring, a daughter, and the first live birth in the declining Southern Resident community in three years. But 30 minutes after birth, the calf died. J35 would not let her baby go.With great effort, she swam with the tiny body on her head and made deep dives to retrieve it when it slipped off.
J35’s response to her calf’s death was a powerful reminder that humans are not the only species that experiences grief.
Orca rammings of vessels around the Strait of Gibraltar over the past four years. There are some wild theories as to why orcas appear to be targeting vessels, including the vendetta of one matriarch called White Gladis that was struck by a boat.

BLA 37 foot-long dead gray whale washed ashore off Ventura. It was likely headed north towards Alaska following it’s annual migration to warm lagoons in Baja. Scientists are not sure of the cause of death, but have said that gray whale mortality has increased due to starvation due to poor feeding ground conditions in the arctic. Warmer ocean temperatures reduce the productivity of amphipods, their food. The whale will likely be towed out to sea today to a location where it is less likely to drift back to shore.

SUNEW: Two very drunk fishermen decided a floating dead whale was the perfect photo-op.
“Watch this thing explode,” one voice says off-camera, as if that’s not the most ominous sentence you can say near a several-ton corpse.
The guy who posted it claimed the whale “didn’t smell” and had “just died.” Translation: freshly deceased, still extremely explosive.
“It wasn’t rotten, it just happened—and we were drunk,” he added, answering exactly zero follow-up questions anyone should ever have.

PLThis is not something I would typically post but I feel like this needs to be shared. Yesterday when we found this recently deceased young humpback whale, the first thing I felt was sad. We weren’t able to immediately determine its cause of death and hoped it was natural and painless. However today we came across the whale again in clearer, calmer water and could see a rope around the whale’s tail with something heavy weighing it down. This whale died unnecessarily and far too soon due to entanglement.
When I saw that rope I got MAD. In the last few years the number of entangled whales I’ve seen with my own eyes has hit double digits. And we frequently see whales with evidence of prior entanglement. THIS IS NOT OKAY! More than 1000 whales and dolphins die every day due to entanglement in fishing gear.
One way to prevent whale entanglement is to spread awareness, so this is me trying to spread the word that this is a major issue. If you see an entangled whale, don’t try to free it yourself but report it to the coast guard and document it the best you can. Either don’t eat seafood or you must, choose sustainably harvested seafood and use resources such as @seafoodwatch.
