The first thing you will notice when you see this watch is the second hand. It's weird. It's an automatic movement, but why is it ticking. Tick, tick, tick, tick. My whole reasoning behind buying automatics is to see the smooth sweeping motion of the second hand. But that's where it gets interesting. Thanks to Sarath for explaining it in a way a 5 yo would understand, but I had to dig deeper, after all I have credentials of taking apart a movement and putting it back together, 😉 have i told that story before 🤣😅 So in a regular watch movement, there are 4 gear wheels, and the second hand is driven by the 4 wheel. The escapement allows the 4th gear to advance each second, and how many times the hand jumps is based on the frequency of the watch. Usually, around 4-10 ticks a second However, thanks to the Dead Beat complication on the True Seconds there, this is dropped down to 1 hz, so it only ticks once a second. Sounds simple but quite complicated. To quote hodinkee "The seconds hand isn't driven directly by the going train of the watch; instead, it's propelled forward by a spiral spring, held under tension by the mainspring. On the same axis as the escape wheel, there's a star wheel against the teeth of which a metal &whip" presses. As the star wheel turns, the whip periodically slips free of the tip of one tooth, before coming to rest against the next; as it does so, the deadbeat/true beat/jumping seconds hand skips forward. This happens once per second. " Ok, but what's the use case? When you want to time things up to the second, so if you had a sweeping hand, you would likely miss it as the hand would have progressed. Fascinated by chronometers and deadbeat seconds I chanced onto the strange story of the Omega Synchrobeat (Ref. OT 14.306). A deadbeat seconds built on the Caliber 372 an upgraded evolution of the storied Cal 30T2. Destined for the US market 720 were made and Omega recalled the watch for meltdown and destruction as it had lubrication issues. Seemingly 703 managed to be recalled - leaving 17 survivor watches in the wild. This is one of the survivors I recently found in Japan - an incredible 34.5mm diameter and 10.5mm thickness watch that sits smaller than all of the modern deadbeat seconds watches of the last decade - @lelangelust had an excellent post on some of these amazing modern deadbeat seconds watches I recommend you see that, but I feel like this would be a really worthy vintage competitor to the modern marvels by Peterman Bedat 1967 @petermann_bedat , The Ferdinand Berthoud RSM and the Lovely Lange Homage to Walter Lange - maybe if only on the deadbeat - rather than finishing, dial, fancy fusee chains, inner angles, and sapphire casebacks 🤔😆🤘. Omega was really incredibly ahead of their time and I think this caps my menagerie of Omega GD, Omega Diapason and the Omega 30T2 that started it. #deadbeatseconds #omega #synchrobeat #watchcollecting #horology

The power reserve at 12 o’clock and the ticking central seconds hint that there is something special underneath. Turn the watch over and you can see this DB25 combines the Starry Varius dial aesthetics with a movement featuring a deadbeat seconds and a tourbillon. The fourth wheel in the middle of the movement jumps once per second and the tourbillon on the right makes a full rotation every 30 seconds. Both mechanisms have their own rhythms, like a drummer playing different beats with their hands and feet.
