Helen Keller’s birthday and Deafblind Awareness Week mark the perfect time to follow more Deafblind influencers. Here are some I follow, and if you know more tag them in the comments. Catarina Rivera @BlindishLatina Dr. Jasmine Simmons @DrJasmineSimmons Loni Friedman @Loni.Friedmann Rebecca Alexander @_RebeccaAlexander_ Molly Watt @MollyWattTalks Morrison @Morrison_sarj Ashlea Brittney Hayes @AshleaBrittney Descriptive Transcript: Wearing a soft, stylized floral necklace over a blue dress, Haben speaks to the camera. Behind her is a textured wood wall. Haben: It’s DeafBlind Awareness Week, and Helen Keller’s birthday is June 27th. Photo: 24-year-old Helen holds a rose to her face while her other hand rests on an open Braille book. Her eyes are closed, her hair is pulled back into a low bun, and she’s wearing a white blouse with a bow at the front of her throat. Haben: So we use this week to increase awareness. Helen lived from 1880 to 1968. And what I find fascinating is that many of the questions she received during her lifetime: “Why do you travel if you can’t see? How do you have a voice when you can’t hear?” Those questions are still being asked today. And part of that is because we still have an ocular-centric culture. We still need to move away from only imagining a world with sight, to imagining and designing a multisensory world. Helen loved traveling and speaking. She visited so many countries! Short but sweet & simple reel. I’ve been seeing this trend about people describing themselves and the assumptions they get about themselves. So I figured to make one thing hearing people often assume that I cannot drive because I’m DeafBlind. Lemme repeat myself… DeafBlind even hearing Blind people have a spectrum of different types of vision losses. (I hate the term “impaired” like hearing impaired or vision impaired- we are NOT broken. Ok rant over). DISCLAIMER: I was parked, not driving! Safety comes first. I’ve been driving since I was 15 and a half years old. When I was 15, my mom and I had no clue that I was trubiz DeafBlind from birth. I found that out later on when I was 19 because of the Deaf community recognizing me being DeafBlind. I was in denial for YEARS until 2019, I decided to get my eyes taken care of. Made an appointment with anxiety due to interpreters but they made my experience so so so smoothly that I was taken aback. 2020 came and that was when I found out from my gene test results I was born DeafBlind. My world changed that moment. I connected all the dots with my night time struggles from childhood to now. One day I know I will have to give up my driving privileges which is the HARDEST thing for me to mentally prepare for. I have hope because I’ve met several DeafBlind people who are older than me and some of them still drives and some don’t BUT have their support system set up. It shows me that it’s okay to ask for support. I can drive in the daytime with no problems but night time, it depends on the area if it’s bright or not. So I’m aware of what my limitations are now. Anyways, for now, yes I can drive. Instead of assuming all DeafBlind or even Deaf people cannot drive. You’re dead on wrong. Even some hearing people don’t drive! Video ID: Loni, a white female, is in her car. She is wearing all black clothes with three silver necklaces. She has rings on both of her hands. Her hair is newly dyed blonde streak on front of her hair and the rest is black. Transcription: “I’m DeafBlind and I can drive. *applause sound effect* “ #deafmythbuster #deafblind #deafworld #deafblindawareness

I had an incredible discussion with Jesse Stanley of The American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, along with his interpreter, Tony Bonny. We talked about the school’s work to increase awareness and understanding of the deafblind community—an important and often overlooked conversation. DID YOU KNOW? 👀 Blind people can walk fast. We can be sure of where we’re going. We can have white canes taller than we are because we walk fast + need more time to react. Blind people don’t have to be slow just because we’re blind. Does this surprise you? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️ Video Description: Catarina is a light-skinned Latiné woman with dark brown hair worn up wearing sunglasses, a striped black/white sleeveless top, black capri workout pants with cut outs on the side, and white sneakers. She’s walking with her white blindness cane between tall light-colored buildings on a pedestrian path with other people walking around too. She has a focused face. The video shows her coming toward the camera then walking past and shows her back. Then at the end she walks toward the camera and playfully puts her arms and a knee in the air then smiles widely. There’s a black text with white text on the video the whole time that says, “Newsflash: Blind people can walk fast! 💨” Near the end, a white text box with black text appears above and says, “Did this surprise you? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️” A lively instrumental song is playing in the background. #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityAdvocacy #BlindishLatina #deafblind #Blind #Blindness #Disability #UsherSyndrome #WhiteCaneAwareness

Video Description: Video of Catarina, a light-skinned Latiné woman, holding her white blindness cane with Molly Burke, a White woman who’s also holding her white cane. They are outside on a street in London animatedly chatting away while the camera circles around them from different angles. A screenshot from a New York Times article is shown at the beginning which says: “The Worst That Could Happen? Going Blind, People Say”. “Personal Health” is the article category and the The NY Times logo’s at the top in script. After 3 seconds, the screenshot goes away and black text boxes with white text show. All text is above in the caption. There’s groovy instrumental music playing in the background with the song title “Please Think Twice”. Catarina has dark brown wavy hair and is wearing black leggings, a dark turtleneck with yellow squiggles, silver hoops, and sneakers. Let’s SPREAD this message 💜 We’re disabled. We get to this restaurant differently than nondisabled people. Catarina uses a white cane + Emily uses a power wheelchair. But guess what? We’re whole humans. We like to go to brunch, talk a lot, laugh together, and be fabulous. Disabled people don’t exist to serve as tragedies or inspiration. We’re the main characters of our lives! Do you like this message? Let us know in the comments! ⬇️ P.S. This reel has no sound. This was an accident that somehow happened during the editing process but since it’s already up and most people watch with the sound off, we’re rolling with it! Originally it was going to have fun music but no voiceover. Video Description: 1. Catarina and Emily wave to each other on a NYC street in front of an arch with greenery and pink flowers. 2. Catarina and Emily enter the outdoor patio of a restaurant. Emily goes first in her power wheelchair and Catarina follows behind with her white blindness cane. 3. Catarina looks at the camera and kicks her foot up behind her while giving a thumbs up and a smile (this pairs with the “But guess what?” Text box). 4. Catarina and Emily are sitting at a table chatting away and gesturing with their hands. 5. Catarina and Emily exit the restaurant and look at the camera while speaking to each other. Emily, a White woman with brown curly hair is wearing glasses, black sneakers, and a black dress with a white pattern with daisies. Catarina is a light-skinned Latine woman. She’s wearing a long-sleeve flowy green shirt tied at the center, white shorts with a black flower pattern, black sandals, and silver hoops. There are black text boxes with white text on the reel (all text above in caption). There is no sound on the reel. The cover photo shows them greeting each other in the arch and has a black text box with white text that says: “Disabled people are whole humans 👋🏼” #DisabilityAdvocate #DisabilityAwareness #BlindishLatina #DisabilityJoy #deafblind #deaf #Blind #UsherSyndrome #WheelchairUser #AntiAbleism #Ableism #AbleismIsTrash
