I’m gonna be really honest with you here guys. When I got home from MasterChef, my mental wellbeing was in a really bad place. The world around me felt dark and I struggled to get off the couch for the first few weeks. After I saw my doctor and we got a plan in place to help me get back on track, I knew that I couldn’t just rely on that. I knew that I had to take my mental wellbeing into my own hands and one of the things that always made me feel better in the past was to simply get outside in nature and run. Trust me when I say I made all the excuses in the book to not get off the couch and get moving, and I’m a massive procrastinator so it took some serious energy and convincing to get me going, but once I was outside and my feet hit the ground… it was full steam ahead! For me there’s something special about running outside as opposed to running inside on a treadmill. I guess there’s always something to look at which makes me present in the moment, and running makes me BREATHE which I sometimes forget to do properly when life is moving fast. The fresh air, the Vitamin D and the connection with the earth makes me feel on top of the world afterwards and it’s why I keep going back for more. As part of the @queenslandhealth ‘Dear Mind’ campaign, they have the ‘6 Building Blocks’ for keeping our mental wellbeing strong. I keep going back to the Building Block ‘Embrace Nature’ - it’s all about getting outside and connecting with nature which I’ve found has really helped me over the past year to overcome my mental battles. ✨This week did not go at all how I expected. Though I started optimistic and positive, there were curve balls, disappointment, sadness and the most random and unexpected of occurrences, related to work, family and friends. I am surrounded by a loving family and community of friends and I’m so grateful for their support, but I also recognise that I am responsible for building my own mental and emotional resilience. If my mental wellbeing is strong, then I’m better equipped to process my emotions and respond to stress, and, my general outlook on life remains steady. In the midst of a lot going on, I have taken the moments I can, this week, to be active through physical activity, to connect with friends via the phone and in person, to embrace nature and to take notice. Your mental wellbeing matters and helps you get the most out of life. I hope you can take some time this week to do something for yourself that builds you mental and emotional resilience. But sometimes the thought of a big creative project that's costly or might be difficult can be overwhelming, which is why I wanted to share 3 little ideas for creative projects to do this weekend that don't cost much.  @queenslandhealth's #DearMind campaign is all about adding small things to your life and daily routine that improve how you feel, and I can totally vouch for the fact that even the smallest project will do that. If you're looking for ways to improve your mental wellbeing, Queensland Health has a fantastic website with a list of building blocks and practical tips.
