CRSingle Crochet Decrease Details ⬇️
sc dec means turning 2 single crochet stitches into one! I have also shown a comparison between sc and sc dec.
🧶In order to make a sc dec:
Recognise the two adjoining stitches where you want to make a sc dec. we are calling them sc 1 and sc 2
1. Insert your hook in sc 1, pull up a loop, you have two loops on your hook.
2. Now, insert your hook in sc 2, pull up a loop, you now have three loops on your hook.
3. Yarn over, pull through all 3 loops.
Your sc dec is ready
This technique is used to reduce/decrease the number of single crochet (sc ) stitches in a row/round. It is usually used in patterns for amigurumi, wearables and wallet flaps. There are a number of methods to make a sc dec. Today I have shared a basic and beginner friendly method. It is also known as sc 2 together ( sc2tog). 🌸

THWelcome to another #JustAtipTuesday - Today I’m showing you how to eliminate gaps and make your decreases look seamless using the invisible decrease technique.
In a standard decrease, where you crochet two stitches together you would: insert hook into first stitch, draw up a loop, then insert hook into second stitch before finishing your decrease. This technique is great when working in rows or with mix of taller stitches. However, when it comes to amigurumi, the standard decrease becomes quite noticeable. Not only that but it also leaves larger gaps allowing the stuffing to show.
To avoid this and make your decreases blend with the rest of the stitches, use the invisible decrease method:
- Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch, and into front loop of the second stitch (3 loops on hook) yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through remaining two loops.

👉 Increase (inc) means making two stitches in the same stitch.
This helps your crochet piece expand (used for circles, shaping toys, etc.).
Steps (Single Crochet Increase):
1. Insert hook into the stitch.
2. Yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
3. Yarn over, pull through both loops → 1 sc made.
4. Insert hook into the same stitch again.
5. Repeat the steps → now you have 2 sc in one stitch.

THHappy #JustATipTuesday - Today’s tip is for my amigurumi makers. If a standard single crochet decrease, aka sc two together, leaves you with gaps or stitches that don’t quite look like the rest, try using the invisible decrease method.
If you’re a seasoned amigurumi maker I guarantee you already do this, but for those who have yet to try this method, give it a shot!
The trick is to insert the hook only into the front loops of both stitches, then single crochet them together.

Last week I posted a couple free amigurumi patterns so I figured it was only appropriate to share one of my favorite tips for amigurumi making: using an Invisible Decrease when crocheting in the round.
The ball on the left was made using a traditional single crochet decrease, which makes the decrease stitches look a bit more noticeable and leaves small gaps in your fabric. The ball on the right was made with invisible decrease, which makes your stitches appear more seamless without any visible gaps.
Now, I’m sure many of you already know and do this, but those who do not, give it a try! I guarantee it’ll make your amigurumi look more flawless.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Instead of the traditional way where you insert your hook into the entire stitch, yarn over, then insert hook into the next stitch…
Insert the hook only into the front loop of the 1st stitch, DO NOT yarn over, and insert hook into the front loop of the next stitch. Finish your single crochet as normal, making sure you pull tight at the end.
