THIt’s always interesting when someone equates “playing small” with being ethical.
Compliance means you understand the law.
Conformity means you’re afraid to challenge outdated norms.
Those are not the same thing.
You can read your statutes, know your scope, anchor your work in theory…
and still practice in a way that doesn’t look like everyone else.
Unconventional doesn’t threaten ethics.
It threatens comfort.
And comfort has never been the standard for clinical integrity.

1. Don’t Criticize, Condemn, or Complain
People naturally resist criticism and become defensive.

2. Give Honest and Sincere Appreciation
Everyone craves appreciation, but it must be genuine, not flattery.

Example: If a colleague does a great job, acknowledge their effort with specific praise like, “I really admire how you handled that client’s concern.”
3. Arouse in the Other Person an Eager Want
People are more likely to take action when they see a personal benefit.
Instead of focusing on what you want, show how it aligns with their desires.
Example: Instead of telling a child to clean their room, explain how a clean space will make it easier to find their toys.
By avoiding criticism, giving sincere appreciation, and aligning requests with others’ interests, you can create positive relationships and influence people effectively.
