🌈 Refraction of Light Refraction of light is the bending of light when it passes from one medium to another due to a change in its speed. 📌 Definition Refraction is the change in direction of light when it travels from one transparent medium to another (like air to water). 🔬 Why Does Refraction Happen? Light changes speed in different materials: Fast in air Slower in water Even slower in glass When speed changes → direction changes → light bends. 📏 Laws of Refraction (Snell’s Law) The incident ray, refracted ray, and normal all lie in the same plane. This constant is called the refractive index. 📊 Refractive Index (n) Higher refractive index → more bending. 🌊 Example A pencil placed in water appears bent. A swimming pool looks shallower than it really is. 🔁 Types of Refraction Towards the normal → When light enters a denser medium (air → glass). Away from the normal → When light enters a rarer medium (glass → air). #refractionoflight #refraction #snellslaw #refractiveindex #physicsvibespk

Day 254/365 of sharing my teaching practices Topic : Introducing Reflection and Refraction in ray optics . a green laser through a cylindrical cold drink bottle (filled with water + few drops of Dettol for scattering) and incense smoke on top shows the hidden path of light 🌫️ ( In single medium → light travels in straight line ) ( At boundary → two things happen together )  { Reflection → part of light bounces back }  { Refraction → part of light bends and enters new medium } And the most magical part → you can actually see both at once. Light rays refract when they traverse through different transparent mediums, bending due to changes in speed when moving through different optical densities. If you've ever went swimming, you would've noticed that a person's lower torso that is submerged in water always seems shorter! Well its because of refraction.🔦💡⤵️ Notably, when light passes from a denser to a less dense medium, it refracts away from the normal, and this happens as long as the angle of incidence is less than the critical angle. In this video, the critical angle of the glass block is 41.8°, given that the refractive index of the glass block is 1.5 n = sin r / sin i (in this case, the angle of refraction (90°) > angle of incidence, so r is placed on top. sin90 = 1) n = 1 / sin C n is the refractive index C is the critical angle Total internal reflection occurs under specific conditions when the angle of incidence is more than the critical angle🪞🪞🔦 This principle is critical in applications such as fiber optic communication (in wifi systems) and checking the authenticity of gemstones (whether a diamond is real or not).📶📶💎💍💍 Video credit: https://youtu.be/NAaHPRsveJk?si=D83Sakk7_aBdU1-2 #light #physics #sciencesimplified #science #singapore #learninginprogress #cool #refraction #refection #bedok #ongandlow

how different types of mirrors interact with a beam of parallel light rays, demonstrating their distinct reflective properties. Plane Mirror: A plane mirror has a flat reflecting surface. When parallel light rays strike it, they reflect in a parallel manner, following the laws of reflection (angle of incidence equals angle of reflection at each point). This results in a virtual, upright image of the same size as the object. Concave Mirror: A concave mirror curves inward, like the inside of a spoon, and is also called a converging mirror. It focuses the parallel light rays to a single point called the principal focus after reflection. This property is used in applications like solar furnaces and car headlights to concentrate light. Convex Mirror: A convex mirror bulges outward, and is known as a diverging mirror. It causes the parallel light rays to spread out or diverge after reflection. The reflected rays appear to originate from a virtual focal point behind the mirror. This wide field of view makes them ideal for use as rear-view mirrors in vehicles and for security purposes.source ›@explainingscience_
