4 years ago I fell into the worst state of derealization imaginable. I never thought I’d feel normal again. I genuinely felt like the only person in the world who felt this way. I lost all emotions. Couldn’t feel the world around me. Didn’t even recognize myself in the mirror. Just this emptiness and isolation I never want to experience again. At my lowest, I made a promise with God - if you ever let me feel normal and real again, I’d never take a day for granted. From there, I dedicated everything to overcoming DPDR. Since making a full recovery myself, my life’s mission is helping others do the same. DM me “FREEDOM” on my Instagram @nickdpdr for my 1-1 Coaching 🧬 #dpdr #anxiety #derealization

Tips in caption ❤️ Everyone dissociates but not always to the degree of a disorder. Think of dissociation as a spectrum, where on one side we have things like zoning out, mild day dreaming, imaginary friends, imagining future scenarios and on the other side we have depersonalization, derealization & dissociation disorders (refer to for an actual visual of this) This can also look different for other people When you struggle with dissociation it is important to bring yourself back to present moment. This isn’t always easy but things such as ice, cold water, dancing, shaking, giving yourself a hug, gently pinching / touching your arms & legs can help. Essentially, you want to try to engage your senses. It is also helpful to remind yourself that dissociation has been a tool that has kept you safe & what your body and mind deemed best in the moment. Judging yourself for this will not make it easier. Safety affirmations can help as well “I am safe” “Everything in this present moment is okay” ❤️ . . . . . #mentalhealth #anxiety #trauma #unhealedtrauma #depression #stress #ptsd #complextrauma #cptsd #selfhelp #selflove #motivation #procrastination #wellness #therapy #therapist #mentalhealthmatters #socialanxiety #bpd #bipolar #dsm #adhd

TW: depersonalization & derealization. This is what DPDR used to feel like for me. On the outside, I probably looked a bit disoriented… maybe anxious… but mostly “normal.” On the inside, everything felt wrong. Supermarkets were one of the hardest places. The lights felt too bright and artificial. Sounds felt sharper. My vision felt flat, fuzzy, almost greyed out, like I was watching the world through a screen. It felt like I wasn’t fully in my body. Like I was there, but not really there. Sometimes I’d question whether I was even real, or whether this was how things would feel forever. I lived like this constantly for more than 10 years. Not on and off. Not just during panic attacks. All the time. What made it worse was the fear of the feeling itself. I was terrified of DPDR, terrified of making it stronger, terrified that pushing myself would make it stay permanently. So I avoided. Places. Situations. Change. But the feeling stayed anyway. What I eventually learned is that DPDR, as distressing as it is, is not dangerous. It’s a nervous system response, often linked to anxiety, not a sign that you’re broken or losing your mind. And the way out wasn’t trying to get rid of the feeling. It was learning to live alongside it. Doing things while feeling unreal. Going to the shop anyway. Letting the sensations be there without checking, analysing, or fighting them. That’s how the moments of relief started. Seconds at first. Then minutes. Then longer stretches where I forgot to monitor how I felt. Over time, those moments became the norm. If you’re dealing with DPDR right now, please know this: You’re not alone. You’re not broken. And you don’t have to figure this out by yourself. I’ve opened a free DPDR support group chat inside my community where people can share experiences, ask questions, and talk openly with others who genuinely understand, including me. 💬 Comment “dpdr group”and I’ll invite you in. I know how isolating this can feel. I’m happy to talk.

What does anxiety feel like? Imagine this: no obvious triggers, no people around, no traffic, clear skies—yet your mind is in overdrive. Your body feels disconnected, as if you’re floating through a world that no longer feels real. This is the harsh reality for many who experience derealization and depersonalization—a state where anxiety distorts perception, making even the familiar feel distant and strange. Have you ever felt like this?
