JBIn a remarkable act of bravery, 20-year-old Derrick Byrd rushed into a raging house fire in 2019 to rescue his 8-year-old niece, Mercedes, ensuring her safety at great personal cost.
The fire broke out early morning in the family home. Byrd first helped his sister lower her children including two young nephews - from a second-floor window. When Mercedes slipped and fell back inside amid the flames, Byrd did not hesitate. He ran through the blaze, wrapped his shirt around her face to shield her from smoke, and carried her to safety. All family members escaped unharmed thanks to his quick actions.
Byrd sustained severe second- and third-degree burns to his face, neck, arms, and back. Airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, he spoke from his hospital bed, covered in bandages: "I'd run back in there and do it again even if I got burnt worse or died. She's young... she has her whole life ahead."
His selfless courage has inspired many, highlighting the unbreakable bond of family love.
