FRDid you know some mantids can actually produce sounds? This is an adult female of Idolomantis diabolica, the giant devils flower mantis. They have one of the most impressive threat poses of any mantis but not only does it look impressive, it is also augmented by clicking and hissing, which the mantis produces by rubbing its forewings against each other and against the abdomen.
I do feel kinda bad for annoying her though...

EXThe devil flower mantis is a large, striking praying mantis native to eastern and southern Africa. Scientifically known as Idolomantis diabolica, it’s considered one of the most beautiful mantis species in the world.
It has long legs, a slender body, and dramatic colors—white, green, and purple with bright eye-like patterns on its inner legs. When threatened, it performs an impressive defensive display by spreading its arms and wings to appear much larger and more intimidating.
Despite its fierce name, the devil flower mantis is a calm ambush hunter. It waits patiently among flowers and vegetation, perfectly camouflaged, and feeds mainly on flying insects such as butterflies, bees, and flies.
Because of its size, beauty, and slow growth, it is highly admired by insect enthusiasts, but it is also one of the more delicate mantis species, requiring warm temperatures and careful care to survive.

OLAfter I posted the video of that first Lotus Mantis - my inbox hasn’t been the same. People from around the world started sending me their own encounters. Strange, beautiful creatures they had never noticed before… until now.
This one came from Martin L., who spent the night alone in a forest cabin near a remote reserve in northern Oregon. He stepped outside to check the firewood when something caught his eye—a soft splash of color perched on a log. At first, he thought it was a flower that had fallen from a nearby tree.
But then, the flower turned its head and looked at him.
Locals call it the Pinkshade Seraph. Its entire body is cloaked in layered, petal-like structures—so perfect in their mimicry that even up close it’s hard to believe it’s alive. Every movement is precise, almost ritualistic, like a dancer mid-performance.
Some say the Pinkshade Seraph only appears in places where the forest still remembers what silence feels like. Others believe it watches over lone wanderers, a guardian of those who respect the woods.
Martin said he felt watched all night—not in a threatening way, but like something ancient and unseen was keeping him company.
Now I wonder… how many more are out there, blooming in the dark, waiting for someone to notice?
