The difference between said, murmured, and spat isn’t subtle; it shapes tone, pacing, and how we experience a character’s inner world. Authors use diction to signal class, emotion, era, and intent, often before we consciously register it.
Diction refers to an author’s deliberate choice of words. It is one of the primary tools through which meaning is constructed in a text. Through diction, writers establish tone (their attitude toward the subject or audience) and shape mood: the emotional atmosphere experienced by the reader.
Diction is central to both close reading and critical thinking because word choice is never neutral (!!) Authors select language that assigns value and guides our interpretation. By attending to diction, we can identify how tone is established and how mood is cultivated to elicit particular emotional responses. It’s never an accident.
