Cindy found this MONSTER fly here at @manu.biostation last night with @taniaawa @angesotoc. I didn’t even know flies could get this huge! Turns out there’s a weird family of tropical flies called Pantophthalmidae, sometimes known as timber flies. They are most closely related to soldier flies, and although they look like Tabanids (horse flies), they actually are not that closely related to them. They have an unusual trait: the larvae eat wood, which is very rare for Dipterans. They adults dont feed at all! This one is a female. She doesn’t bite or sting, totally harmless, and she let me hold her and pet her with no problem. I love these flies! En bilinen cinsleri Anopheles, Aedes ve Culex’tir. Bu küçük, zarif görünümlü böcekler aslında ekosistem açısından oldukça önemli bir yere sahiptir; birçok balık, kurbağa ve böcek larvası için besin kaynağıdırlar. Ancak aynı zamanda insanlık tarihindeki en ölümcül hastalık vektörlerinden biridirler. ▪︎Sivrisinekler tam başkalaşım geçirir: yumurta → larva → pupa → erişkin (imago). Dişi sivrisinekler yumurtalarını genellikle su yüzeyine veya suyla temas eden nemli bölgelere bırakır. Yumurtadan çıkan larvalar suda yaşar, organik maddeleri tüketerek büyür. Larva evresinin sonunda pupa haline gelir ve birkaç gün içinde yetişkin hale dönüşür. Bu süreç sıcaklığa bağlı olarak birkaç gün veya hafta sürebilir. Erişkin hale gelen sivrisinekler kısa bir ömre sahiptir — genellikle birkaç hafta yaşarlar. ▪︎Erkek sivrisinekler yalnızca bitki nektarı ve meyve suyu ile beslenir. Böylece kan pıhtılaşmadan akmaya devam eder ve sivrisinek rahatça emer. Kanı aldıktan sonra genellikle 2–3 gün boyunca yumurta üretimine odaklanır. ▪︎Hastalık yapan virüs veya parazitler, sivrisineğin önceki kan emme sırasında sindirim sistemine geçmiş olur. Bu mikroorganizmalar sivrisineğin tükürük bezlerine göç eder ve orada çoğalır. MIÍASE CUTÂNEA: INFESTAÇÃO PARASITÁRIA POR LARVAS DE DIPTEROS 📚 ETIMOLOGIA Miíase deriva do grego myia (mosca) + -íase (condição patológica). Cutânea refere-se à pele. 🪰🪱🧬 ETIOLOGIA Infestação causada por larvas (estágio imaturo) de moscas da ordem Diptera. Espécies frequentes: • Dermatobia hominis (mosca berneira) • Cochliomyia hominivorax (mosca da bicheira) • Cordylobia anthropophaga As moscas depositam ovos na pele ou em feridas; após eclosão, as larvas penetram no tecido. ⚙️ FISIOPATOLOGIA As larvas utilizam enzimas proteolíticas (enzimas que degradam proteínas) para penetrar e digerir tecido. Podem alimentar-se de tecido necrótico (morto) ou viável (vivo), dependendo da espécie. Classificação clínica: 🔥 Miíase furuncular • Penetração em pele íntegra • Formação de nódulo inflamatório com orifício central • Sensação de movimento, dor ou prurido 🩹 Miíase traumática (em feridas) • Ocorre em úlceras ou lesões abertas • Pode haver grande carga larval • Associada a higiene precária ou imobilidade 🐛 Miíase migratória • Movimento subcutâneo das larvas • Trajetos serpiginosos visíveis • Prurido intenso e inflamação 🔁 TRANSMISSIBILIDADE Não ocorre transmissão pessoa-pessoa. It’s summertime, and you know what that means? Horse flies are out! The first clip is of a female Black Horse Fly (Tabanus atratus) that I caught a few weeks ago. The second clip later in the video is one that I caught back in 2023. I always enjoy catching these particular flies by hand. It’s a fun little challenge for me! Just like female mosquitos, only female horse flies feed on blood. Adult male horseflies on the other hand don’t have the necessary mouthparts to feed on blood. They instead feed on nectar and plant juices. Female horse flies primarily feed on the blood of mammals. Blood is crucial for the development of their eggs. Even if a male inseminates a female, without acquiring blood, the female’s eggs won’t hatch. The mouthparts of a female horsefly are comprised of six flesh-piercing appendages called fascicle. The maxillae are used to stab and rip into flesh. Once the flesh has been successfully cut open, the female horsefly uses a second facial appendage called a hypopharynx. This special mouthpart releases a chemical agent into the open wound that acts as an anticoagulant. This helps with preventing the blood from clotting. With the blood being able to freely ooze out, the female horsefly uses yet another mouthpart, her labrum. The labrum of a horse fly acts as a sponge, which the female will use to soak up and absorb the blood for consumption. This particular species of horse fly can transmit both viral and bacterial diseases to humans and animals, some of which can be life-threatening if left untreated.
