DI🌊🐟 Fish Fact Monday – Old Woman Angelfish 🐟🌊
Today’s video features the Old Woman Angelfish (Pomacanthus rhomboides) - a graceful reef fish with one of the most talked-about names in the ocean 😄
✨ Why are they called the “Old Woman” Angelfish?
Despite the unflattering name, it has nothing to do with age! The name comes from the fish’s elongated snout and slightly drooping mouth, which early observers thought resembled the facial features of an elderly woman. Not the kindest comparison - but definitely memorable!
While science blames the face, many divers jokingly say the name comes from their body pattern, which can look like they’re wearing a pair of high-waisted “granny panties.”
Is this the real reason? Nope.
Is it impossible to unsee once someone points it out? Absolutely 😂
🐠 Appearance
They have a pale grey to silvery body covered in a subtle diamond or net-like pattern, giving them a soft, elegant look that blends well with reef and rocky habitats.
🌊 Habitat
Old Woman Angelfish are found along rocky reefs and coral reefs in the western Indian Ocean, often seen calmly cruising ledges or hovering near reef faces.
🥗 Diet
They primarily feed on sponges, along with tunicates and algae - helping keep reef ecosystems healthy and balanced.
🐟 Fun Fact
Unlike many flashy angelfish species, the Old Woman Angelfish relies on camouflage, calm behaviour, and confidence rather than bright colours for survival.
