TOCarryforward becomes confusing only when children are asked to memorise it. So instead of jumping straight to the traditional method, we tried this visual method first.
Before adding anything, every number was broken down into bundles (tens) and circles (ones).
We always add the circles first. When the circles cross ten, they simply make a new bundle. That bundle then gets added to the other bundles and the circles left become the ones digit.
The child can actually see where it comes from. Just showed him two examples like this and he solved the third one on his own and I never had to re-explain carryforward again.
This is the first step I use when introducing double digit addition with regrouping.
