JOThis past weekend has been a deep dive back into my #Philadelphia roots. It all started with a
sold out show in Cape May New Jersey then a visit to WXPN radio and WHYY TV followed by a really fun afternoon at the @phillies Baseball game where I had the honor to sing the National Anthem. If that wasn’t enough...the next day I went to visit my Father and enjoyed seeing him happy and present...followed by joining my band and a bunch of old friends at the @philadelphiafolkfestival. When I was a teenager I went to the festival and got to experience the recently rediscovered original folk and blues artists like my heroes Mississippi John Hurt and Doc Watson...it was a real full circle, bucket list moment for me to play for over 7000 fans who hung out in the rain but stayed when the sky cleared. Often coming early in the set these three usually set the tone for a more electric guitar driven rock ‘n’ roll set. “If Love Is Earned“ what I think of as an early 70s Elvis song. I like to think that Elvis would’ve liked my song and offered to record it. He may have offered me the 50-50 publishing deal.
The middle song, of course “Trouble Trouble” is sort of Huey “Louis” meets the fabulous Thunderbirds using reckless driving metaphors for life and love. I got the hook for the song from Iola Davis, who was a spokesperson for KKDA soul 73 in Grand Prairie, Texas. A radio station I listened to religiously when I was in Dallas. Maybe the greatest local radio station I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Every day multiple times you would hear from Iola Davis saying “don’t trouble trouble till trouble troubles you Soul 73 KKDA, you’ve got a friend.”
It was one of many proverbs, witticisms, historic speech clips they played throughout the day on KKDA. I wrote the song for a local Austin advertising agency who was looking for a song that the Texas Department of transportation wanted to encourage people not to speed at the same time they raised the speed limit to 85 mph in some places. This song was rejected and became my revenge.
Then this goes into Alphabeta which is kind of a schoolhouse rock song. Though rhythmically or in rhyme scheme loosely based on the folk song Alberta, which I know primarily through Doc Watson. I decided that I could have a rocked up version of Alberta so I just changed it to alphabeta and made it all about the alphabet and what I think about those letters.

(and, yes, I remember getting it in the mail when it came out in the 1900’s) 🤣😉and I remember the satisfaction of naming every artist pictured on the front and back cover. As a kid I thought it was some kind of test or contest and am still kinda waiting for my prize. 🤷♀️👑🎻🪕
THIS copy I found last weekend at a yard sale in one of those plastic sleeves with a tag that said “teenage Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley” and priced at $5.99
That was how it was purchased (by unknown yard sale-er) from a used record store/bookstore here in Nashville in the 2000s.
I find it kind of fascinating, given all of the photos on that cover, front and back, even for this town, that (bookstore) went with the two most, in their mind, “country relatable” names. I mean, also on cover are some pretty recognizable faces (even for Country folk) like Vassar Clements, Doc Watson, Osborne Brothers, and Bill Monroe not to mention Ralph Stanley standing in between Ricky and Keith. Nashville surely you remember “Oh Brother Where Art Thou?”….
Sure there’s some “deep catalog” like Cliff Waldron, Ed Ferris, and even Kenny Baker. That I get. And a super young photo of Sam Bush, etc.
Even though I have it along with a full subscription of every issue, I had to buy it and it’s been fun to look at again.
The 30 something dude who had it for sale also used the “bookstore line” as I picked it up to entice my purchase by saying “that’s a teenage photo of Keith Whitley”
Oh yeah, I’ve heard of Keith Whitley ;)
And yea, I did name everyone out loud for him just before leaving as if maybe this would get me that prize. He was unimpressed.
