Biological dentistry is less about “treating teeth differently” and more about understanding that the mouth is not an isolated system, it’s a living gateway into the entire body. Every tooth sits in bone that’s connected to blood flow, lymphatics, nerves, and immune signaling. So when we treat the mouth as separate, we miss the bigger conversation happening underneath. Biological dentistry asks a different question: how is what we’re doing in the mouth influencing the brain, the heart, the immune system, and the body’s ability to regulate and heal? At its core, it’s a philosophy rooted in biocompatibility and systems thinking. That means choosing materials that are non-toxic and compatible with the body, minimizing inflammatory burden, and respecting the microbiome rather than disrupting it. It also means understanding that procedures like root canals, extractions, or even common dental products can have downstream effects, whether that’s through chronic low-grade infection, immune activation, or interference with things like nitric oxide signaling. The goal isn’t fear, it’s awareness and precision. Biological dentistry also expands the scope of what “oral health” really means. We’re looking at airway function, breathing patterns, tongue posture, sleep quality, and how early development shapes lifelong health. We’re considering how the oral microbiome communicates with the gut and cardiovascular system. We’re paying attention to signs in the mouth as early indicators of systemic imbalance, not just something to clean or drill. Ultimately, this approach is about working with the body, not against it. It’s dentistry that honors the body’s intelligence, reduces unnecessary toxic load, and supports healing at the root level. When done well, it doesn’t just create a healthy smile, it creates a healthier human.

Natural Dentistry in Utah: Beyond “Crown–Root Canal–Repeat” If you’re tired of feeling like every dental visit turns into another crown, another cavity, or another root canal, you’re not alone. At Pinecrest Dental, our **natural** and functional approach starts by asking *why* your teeth keep breaking down—not “what can we drill and fill next.” Instead of jumping straight to the teeth, we look at your airway, tongue position, saliva health, bite, medical history, medications, and family patterns to uncover root causes like dry mouth, acidity, clenching, or sleep‑breathing issues. From there, we focus on: - Preserving natural tooth structure with biomimetic bonding instead of grinding teeth down for crowns whenever possible. - Avoiding root canals and full‑coverage crowns by using better, stronger, more conservative methods—and materials that support whole‑body and oral‑systemic health. - Supporting your mouth’s natural defenses with customized saliva and probiotic therapies so you can keep your teeth, implants, and gums healthy for decades, not just until the next insurance cycle. If “regular dentistry” has left you frustrated or worried about what’s really going on beneath the drill, there *are* newer, more conservative options that treat your mouth as part of your whole body—not just a set of teeth.

People love the idea that teeth can “heal themselves.” It sounds natural. It sounds empowering. But it’s not the full truth. Yes—your body can heal broken bones. Bones are living tissue, filled with cells and supported by a constant blood supply that allows them to regenerate. Enamel is different. It has no blood supply. No living cells. No ability to regenerate once it’s structurally damaged. That means once a cavity forms, a tooth chips, or a crack develops… your body cannot rebuild that lost structure. Can teeth remineralize early damage? Yes. Can they regrow lost enamel or “heal” a hole? No. And believing they can often leads people to delay treatment—turning small, preventable issues into bigger, more invasive problems. The goal isn’t fear. It’s understanding. Protect what your body can’t replace. 🦷✨ #BiomimeticDentistry #DentalTruth #OralHealthMatters #ToothDecay #PreventiveDentistry HolisticDentistry DentalEducation HealthySmile ScottsdaleDentist ArizonaDentist DentalMyths Remineralization SmileScience DentalCare

Biological dentistry has grown fast. But somewhere along the way, it also became a loose marketing term. Good work is being done. But without a shared, science-based framework, dentists are piecing together fragments of protocols and calling it a system. Patients deserve better than this. That’s why we created the Biodentistry Global Standard, a structured, biology-driven framework that connects the mouth to the body and moves dentistry from isolated techniques to reproducible care. We’re building a global community of Real Biodentists who step beyond technician work and into true health expertise. This isn’t a rebrand. It’s the professionalisation of a movement. If you’re a dentist and want access to the BGS Framework Masterclass, comment BGS below and we’ll send you the details. Cheers, Dr. Dome

“But another dentist told me they’ll use the strongest material for my teeth”- a claim I hear often. The truth is, using materials that are stronger than your natural teeth isn't always the best approach. Biomimetic dentistry focuses on using modern materials and techniques to create restorations that behave like natural teeth, requiring a high level of skill and attention to detail. I’m extremely fortunate to have been educated and trained by @pascal_magne the father of biomimetic and modern adhesive dentistry from the very start of my career @uscdentistry

Dental pulp is a vascular connective tissue inside the tooth responsible for dentin formation, nutrition, sensation, defense, and repair, which undergoes degeneration with age. 🦷 1. Anatomy & Histology (Layers of Pulp) From outer to inner: • Odontogenic (Odontoblast) zone → forms dentin • Weil’s cell-free zone → fewer cells, contains nerve plexus • Cell-rich zone → many fibroblasts & undifferentiated cells • Pulp core → blood vessels, nerves, connective tissue 🔬 2. Main Cells • Odontoblasts → dentin formation • Fibroblasts → most numerous, produce collagen • (+ undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, defense cells) ⚙️ 3. Five Functions of Pulp 1. Formative → dentin formation 2. Nutritive → supplies nutrients 3. Protective → pain sensation 4. Inductive → tooth development 5. Reparative → tertiary dentin formation 🔄 4. Life Cycle • Growth/Maturation phase → active dentin formation • Regression phase (aging) → reduced activity, fibrosis • Average pulp volume ≈ 0.02 cc ⸻ ⏳ 5. Aging Changes • ↓ Cell number & size • ↑ Fibrosis & calcification • ↓ blood supply & sensitivity #dentistryworld #medstudent #adc #nbde #dentistrylife

Rozelle struggled with constant fatigue. Bailey with lower back pain and a nervous system that felt “pinned.” Their scans showed an infected titanium implant, a root canal treated tooth, and multiple cavitations. We removed the interference and supported proper healing. Two nights later, Rozelle couldn’t sleep. Not from pain. From energy. Bailey felt a deep release during surgery that stayed with him for days. This is what can happen when you remove chronic oral stressors the body has been compensating for. But here’s the part I love most: Two human beings flying in from Hawaii. Trusting us with their health. Starting in the mouth and changing their whole system. This is more than surgery. It’s connection. It’s creating museum of life moments. It’s building friendships across the world while helping people heal at the root. And it’s exactly why we’re building the Biodentistry Global Standard. To make this level of care accessible far beyond one clinic. If you want to work with us or find a certified Real Biodentist near you, comment BIODENTIST. If you’re a dentist ready to elevate and become a Real Biodentist yourself, comment ELEVATE. And if you simply have questions about your own health journey, drop them below. We read everything. Cheers, Dr Dome

For decades, dentistry has largely been built around a mechanical model. Find the problem.Fix the tooth.Move on. And while that model has helped millions of people, it also left something important out of the conversation. The mouth is not separate from the body. The oral microbiome influences the gut. Chronic dental infections can keep the immune system activated. Inflammation in the gums is associated with cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, and neuroinflammation. We are beginning to understand that what happens in the mouth does not stay in the mouth. It influences the entire system. This is why more patients are asking different questions when they walk into a dental office. Not just:“How do I fix this tooth?” But:“What is happening in my body?”“What is driving this inflammation?”“How does my oral health connect to everything else I’m experiencing?” And practitioners are starting to respond. Dentistry is shifting from a model of repairto a model of investigation, preparation, and whole-body support. That is the foundation of biological dentistry. It requires us to look deeper. To ask better questions. To consider terrain, immune function, nutrition, and systemic health. And when we begin practicing this way, the outcomes change. Patients heal differently.Practices grow differently. And dentistry becomes a much more powerful part of healthcare. If you are a practitioner who feels this shift happening and you’re ready to begin practicing this way… Comment BEYOND and I’ll send you the details about the next round of Beyond the Mouth. #biologicaldentistry #oralhealth #mouthbodyconnection

Why Dentists Still Use Gold Teeth... ... Gold is still used in dentistry because it is incredibly durable and can last several decades without chipping or cracking. Unlike ceramic materials, gold alloys have a wear rate similar to natural enamel, meaning they won't damage the teeth they bite against. Additionally, gold is highly malleable, allowing dentists to create a precise seal at the tooth's edge that prevents future decay while requiring less of the natural tooth to be removed during the procedure. ... SAVE THIS for your next appointment. First — ask what happens if you wait six months. Especially for small cavities. Not everything needs to be fixed today. A good dentist will tell you honestly. Second — get a second opinion. I know that sounds like something dentists hate to hear. But if you’re being told you need a crown, a root canal, or multiple extractions — get another set of eyes. Preferably from someone who practices root-cause dentistry, not just drill-and-fill - like someone from @functionaldentistdirectory Third — ask about less invasive alternatives. Nano-hydroxyapatite varnish. Silver diamine fluoride. Ozone therapy. Remineralization protocols. These exist. And they work. But they won’t always be offered first. Fourth — if any teeth are being extracted, ask how that changes your bite and your airway. This is the one almost nobody asks. Tooth loss shifts your jaw. And your jaw position affects how you breathe at night. And fifth — ask whether your diet or your oral environment is what’s actually causing the problem. Because if you treat the symptom and never fix the cause, you’ll be back in that chair in two years doing it all over again. These are the five things I’d want my own family to know before they said yes to anything. Chime in below in the comments — any that I missed? -Dr. B
