It’s a joy to watch our bird patients discover how good a cold bath feels on a hot day, too. 🛁⁣ ⁣ Providing a bird bath can help our wild neighbors cool off, but it’s important to be responsible. Keep these tips in mind. ⬇️⁣ ⁣ 🌳 Pick a shady spot for your bird bath to keep water temps cool and prevent algae growth.⁣ ⁣ 🥵 Check your water every couple hours on hot days to make sure it’s not scalding! Better yet, opt for a bird bath with a bubbler to help refresh and cool it down. ⁣ ⁣ 💧 Ensure the bath is no deeper than 2 inches maximum, and it’s best if it is has gently sloping sides. ⁣ ⁣ 🪨 Add a clean rock or two to the bath to provide perching surfaces for the birds to safely stand on while drinking or bathing. ⁣ ⁣ 📏 Put the bath at least 10 feet away from any bird feeders or food sources to prevent droppings or seeds from contaminating the water. ⁣ ⁣ 🧽 Clean your bird bath 𝗮𝘁 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 once per week with soap and water, followed by a 10% bleach solution that you let the bath soak in for 10 minutes before rinsing with water. It seems harmless, just a little nest, some chirping, and cute baby birds. But what most people don’t realize is that birds often bring along unwanted guests: bird mites. Bird mites are tiny bugs that live on birds and in their nests. As long as the birds are around, the mites mostly stay with them. But once the birds leave the nest or if the babies die, these mites start looking for a new host. That’s when they spread into your home, crawling on walls, furniture, and even your clothes and skin. The problem is, bird mites bite humans but can’t actually live on us. So, they keep biting and crawling, causing intense itching, red rashes, and skin irritation. And they’re almost invisible, so it’s hard to even know what’s bothering you at first. In some cases, people end up with weeks of sleepless nights and skin issues before figuring it out. Plus, bird droppings can spread diseases and attract other pests like insects and rats. I often get asked whether bats smell or make a mess. The answer is: neither! If you've ever encountered bats in a zoo, you probably met fruit bats or nectar-feeding species. Their droppings and spits can have a strong odor. No surprise, given their diet. But those species don’t live in the wild here. Our native bats eat only insects and that makes all the difference. Their droppings are dry, crumbly and almost weightless. Sometimes they even sparkle a little from the wings and chitin of the insects they've digested. If you crush the droppings, they turn to fine dust. And here's the best part: bat guano is incredibly rich in nitrogen, making it an excellent natural fertilizer. In some parts of the world, it’s even harvested and sold for gardening. Of course, in very large colonies, where droppings and urine accumulate in great quantities, it can start to smell. But here in Hamburg, we don’t have massive bat roosts like that. And in bat care, where enclosures are cleaned daily, there’s no smell at all. So maybe this helped you see bat poop in a new light? That would be amazing - because one of the biggest myths is that bats are dirty or smelly.
