Duality is really the belief in two distinct worlds: an “inner world” of thoughts and emotions, and an “outer world” of matter and physicality. This seeming duality is only an illusion, as our inner world and outer world are truly one. If we believe they are truly separate, we live as helpless victims. If we believe they are truly one, we live as empowered co-creators. This division between our thoughts/emotions and the material world is the cause of all suffering and victimhood. This illusion must be pierced if we are to attain true Christ consciousness, for how else can we perform greater works than Christ if we do not attain the spiritual vision of Christ, which sees all things as one?

Substance dualism is the idea that the universe is not just physical matter. Instead, the world is divided into two: physical stuff and mind stuff. There are thoughts, and then there’s your body. There’s your brain, and then there’s your mind. One of the principal proponents of dualism is René Descartes. #Dualism is argued on the basis of the law of identity. Essentially, he says that if two things are different in any way, then they must be different things. So if we can prove that our minds are different from our bodies, then we must establish them as different substances. #Descartes then goes on to provide various ways in which mind stuff is different from physical stuff. First, for example, he says that physical stuff occupies space, but mental stuff does not. Then he says that the material world can be divided or cut up, but the mind cannot be so divided. But the biggest difference between mind and body goes back to his cogit and this is to do with doubt. Because, for Descartes, we cannot doubt our mind because even doubting is an act of the mind, let alone the random miscellany of thoughts we have on any given day. But the universe can be doubted. It might be the Matrix or a simulation or the work of an evil demon. And so the mind cannot be doubted, but the universe can. And so Descartes thinks he’s provided at least three ways in which the #mind and the body are different and therefore they must be different things. He thinks he’s proven dualism and that the world is not just physical. #Philosophy #epistemology #education #learning
