You’re preparing the body to produce force, react quickly, and move with speed and control. 🔴 Static stretching: It does the opposite. As opposed to static stretching which is where you aren’t moving. And even more importantly, don’t forget to do your warm up sets for the specific exercise that you’re going to do. The days of static stretching and balancing on one leg holding your quads are over. Get moving and get warming up correctly! How should you warm up prior to a lifting session? A lot of times, you’ll see people prepare for their workout by performing numerous static stretches, which consist of holding a muscle in an elongated position for anywhere between 12-60 seconds or longer. However, research in recent years suggested that pre-workout static stretching could actually impair subsequent performance. In contrast, dynamic stretching involves performing a controlled movement through the range of motion of the active joints (Fletcher 2010). This serves to increase core temperature, increase central drive, improve joint range of motion, reduce muscle-tendon unit stiffness, overall prepare you for your upcoming lifts, and has been found to increase performance. A meta-analytical review from 2013 concluded that generally speaking, performing only static stretching immediately prior to lifting should be avoided. However, a 2012 systematic found that shorter durations of static stretching pre-exercise did not compromise maximal muscle performance, whereas longer durations (1min or more) did. According to Behm and Chaouachi (2011), the general recommendation for a pre-exercise session warmup can look like: 1️⃣low-moderate intensity steady-state cardio (completely optional; I typically do not do this with clients unless they are feeling cold) 2️⃣short dynamic warmup routine 3️⃣sport-specific dynamic activities (optional) If you want to do some static stretching, I generally recommend doing it post-workout or doing it in a separate session altogether. However, you COULD include it as part your pre-workout routine if you’re stretching the antagonist muscles (e.g. stretching the quads before doing a hamstring exercise). Stretching before and after a run This is something I genuinely think makes a massive difference - stretching has been a big part of keeping me running consistently and relatively injury-free. Before a run, I stick to DYNAMIC stretching. Moving through range, getting warm, and prepping the tissues that are about to take load. I usually go for around 10 reps of each movement (e.g. leg swings) rather than holding anything. After a run, it’s STATIC stretching. This is where I slow things down and actually hold positions - usually 30-45 seconds per stretch - to let everything decompress after the session. I’ll be honest - I probably do more stretching than most. Normally 10–15 minutes minimum before and after, and it’s been a bit of a saviour for me when it comes to niggles and injury prevention. It’s not magic, and it won’t replace smart training - but as part of the bigger picture, it’s something I really believe in. #stretching #physio #dynamicstretching #staticstretching
