STA big book of birds! 🦜
The Library has just acquired a beautiful volume of parrot illustrations by Edward Lear, published in 1832.
‘Illustrations of the family of Psittacidae, or Parrots’ features 42 spectacular hand-coloured lithographs of parrots, many from Australia.
Lear worked in great detail, from the beak down to the claws. He used opaque watercolours and applied touches of egg white on the feathers, to give them a lifelike sheen.
On Wed 17 July you can come into the Library and get up close to some of the Library’s rarest and most beautiful bird books and drawings, including works by Gould, Audubon, Lewin and Lear.
A selection of works will be on display, from 11am to 1pm. No need to book, just drop by.
