The light repetitive pressure on different parts of the body (meridian points) can help the body leave fight or flight. Tapping (or EFT) has been researched and shown to be effective for anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. It’s also shown to have a positive impact on self esteem. I used to be skeptical of EFT until I understood how it works in the brain. EFT works by calming the nervous system while the brain is processing a stressful thought or memory, allowing the brain to reconsolidate the memory with less emotional charge. When something feels stressful, the brain’s alarm system (the amygdala) switches on. EFT uses gentle tapping on specific acupuncture points while you focus on the issue, sending calming sensory signals back to the brain. This is called bottom-up regulation - the body calming the brain, not thinking your way out of it. Because the body is calm while the memory is active, the brain learns it doesn’t need to react the same way anymore. Repetition strengthens this new response. Sleep locks it in. Same memory. Real change starts in the nervous system. EFT (emotional freedom technique) Tapping works by combining gentle tapping on specific acupressure points with focused attention and intentional language. This combination sends calming signals through the body’s sensory pathways to the brain, particularly to areas involved in stress and emotional processing like the amygdala. By stimulating these acupressure points while bringing awareness to an emotion or belief, EFT helps interrupt the stress response and retrain the nervous system to perceive safety. This allows the body to shift out of fight-or-flight and into a regulated, parasympathetic state, where healing and emotional processing can occur. A 2020 study by Dr. Peta Stapleton, published in the Journal of Psychological Trauma, found that EFT Tapping reduced cortisol (the primary stress hormone) by 43%. In this randomized, controlled trial, participants had their cortisol levels measured through saliva before and after a 60-minute session.
