Put the egg in a glass of water.
* Egg sinks and lies flat → very fresh (about 0–1 week old)
* Egg sinks but stands upright → older but usable (around 2–3 weeks old)
* Egg floats → spoiled, discard it
Always remember: the float test shows age, not safety.
After cracking the egg:
A fresh egg has a firm, round yolk and thick egg white.
An old egg has a watery white and a yolk that spreads easily.
Smell test (most important):

HOPutting eggs in water is a simple way to check freshness because of how air builds up inside the shell over time. Fresh eggs have very little air inside, so they sink and lie flat at the bottom of the bowl. As eggs age, moisture and carbon dioxide escape through the shell, and air enters, making the egg more buoyant.
If an egg stands upright but still touches the bottom, it’s older but usually still safe to use soon. If it floats to the top, there’s a large air pocket inside, which means it’s likely expired. The float test works because changes inside the shell affect density, making older eggs lighter relative to water.

Here is how to perform this floating egg test. Gently place your egg into a bowl of water. If the egg sinks, it is fresh. If it tilts upwards or even floats, it is old.
This happens because as eggs age, the small air pockets inside it grow larger as water is released and replaced by air. If the air pocket becomes large enough, the egg may float.
**Please keep in mind that by cracking an egg open, sniffing it, and checking for discoloration is a really precise method of determining freshness. Even if an egg passes these tests, it’s important to fully cook it to a safe temperature before you eat it.
