I just read in the news that the Presidency intends to detach the Aso Rock Presidential Villa from the national grid and switch to solar power. I find this very unfortunate. Not only has the Tinubu administration failed to improve the electricity situation in Nigeria after three years in office, but it now appears they want to run away from it. How many Nigerians can afford to fully switch to solar power? Those who said that if they could not provide 24-hour electricity for Nigeria in their first term, they should not be re-elected have now detached themselves from the national grid.

Presidential Villa to Exit National Grid by March 2026 as N17bn Solar Mini-Grid Nears Completion The Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja is set to fully disconnect from Nigeria’s national electricity grid by March 2026, following the completion and testing of its solar mini-grid, State House Permanent Secretary Temitope Fashedemi has confirmed. The solar installation, completed late in 2025, has undergone technical trials, and officials are optimistic that the Villa will rely entirely on the system within the first quarter of 2026. The project received N10 billion in the 2025 budget and an additional N7 billion in the 2026 appropriation to ensure its completion. Officials say the initiative is expected to cut electricity costs, reduce dependence on diesel generators, and ease pressure on the national grid, which has faced persistent challenges. Fashedemi cited the State House Medical Centre’s transition to solar power earlier in 2025 as a successful example, where battery storage and minimal grid supply have allowed continuous operations. The switch to solar is also aimed at addressing previous issues with unusually high electricity bills and alleged overbilling by power distributors. Those were the powerful words then that inspired hope among Nigerians who longed for light in their homes, stability for their businesses, and growth for their nation. Yet, while Nigerians are still grappling with that unfulfilled, categorical electoral promise - and without clear communication on the obstacles, if any, we read of provision in 2025 budget about the ₦10 billion for solar power at Aso Rock, and in 2026 budget another humongous amount for upgrade and maintenance and now we are being scarcitically told that Presidential Villa has planned to be disconnected from the national grid to rely entirely on solar. It is a gross neglect and deeply worrisome when the seat of power abandons the national grid. One would expect government institutions to lead efforts to strengthen and expand the grid so that other establishments, and ultimately, citizens can benefit. If those in authority disconnect themselves from the system, who then will connect the ordinary Nigerian to reliable power? Promoting renewable energy, as solar systems do, is commendable and necessary for the future. However, this situation reflects a deeper concern: governance lacking compassion and commitment to the governed. You cannot tell the people to fast while feasting yourself, securing yourself while Nigerians remain unsecured. Nigerians do not expect 100% fulfilment of promises, but they do expect 100% effort, accompanied by measurable improvements and clear explanations when gaps exist. Leadership must serve the people, not isolate itself from their daily struggles. -PO

The Governor revealed that the state is effectively insulating itself from nationwide power failures by investing in organic waste conversion and asserting full regulatory control over its electricity market. While addressing the media at the state’s government house on Thursday, Otti noted that a cornerstone of this new strategy is a pilot biogas programme launched at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. He said, “We’re launching a pilot biogas programme at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The whole idea is to turn waste into clean energy and provide Abia with renewable energy from biogas. “This is a pilot programme. Instead of the organic waste that we are disposing, we can turn it with this technology into clean energy, and we will be able to power a whole lot more places, particularly the Umuhaia ring-fence.” The Governor also confirmed that the Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority officially took over the regulation of power from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on December 24. Furthering this autonomy, Otti revealed that the state’s offer to acquire the assets had been negotiated and accepted by the utility firm Enugu Electricity Distribution Company in charge of power in the state. Otti said, “I had reported earlier that our offers to EEDC have been accepted, and we are in the process of raising the funds to pay off EEDC. “On the 24th of December, the Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority took over the regulation of power from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
