PYSo, what exactly does a transistor do?

At its heart, a transistor is a current-controlled device (in the case of a BJT) or a voltage-controlled device (for FETs). It’s designed to amplify or switch electrical signals. Think of it as an intelligent valve that regulates the flow of electrons, allowing a small signal to control a much larger one — the same way a few milliwatts in your mic circuit can eventually become hundreds of watts at your antenna output.
📌Inside the transistor
Let’s take the Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) as our model. It has three regions made from semiconductor materials:
✔️Emitter (E) – sends out charge carriers (electrons or holes).
✔️Base (B) – a very thin, lightly doped layer that controls the flow.
✔️Collector (C) – collects the carriers from the emitter through the base.
When you apply a small current between the base and emitter, it “opens the gate,” allowing a much larger current to flow from collector to emitter. That’s amplification in action — a small input controls a big output.
In radio circuits, this is how we boost weak signals picked up by the antenna into something usable for detection or further amplification.
📌The field-effect transistor (FET)
The FET, used widely in RF designs, works differently. Instead of current, it uses an electric field to control conduction between the source and drain. The gate voltage alters the width of the conductive channel — more voltage, more current flow. FETs are prized for their high input impedance and low noise, perfect for preamps and mixers in your transceiver.
📌Why it matters to ham radio
Every stage in your radio — from the receiver’s first RF amplifier to the final PA that drives your antenna — depends on transistors. Their fast response, small size, and ability to handle high frequencies make them indispensable for modern ham gear.
Next time you key your mic, remember: thousands (or even millions) of these microscopic switches are firing in perfect sync to make your signal heard across the bands.
