BREver wonder what’s actually happening when we say “ICSI”? 👀
ICSI stands for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection; it’s one of the most incredible techniques in modern fertility treatment. During this process, an embryologist selects a single healthy sperm and injects it directly into the center of an egg using a microscopic glass needle.
Originally, ICSI was used mostly for cases of severe male factor infertility (low sperm count, poor motility, or abnormal morphology). But now? It’s become standard in most IVF labs because it helps reduce fertilization failure and gives embryos the best possible start.
The next day, we check to see if fertilization occurred, and what we’re looking for are two pronuclei (2PN). Each pronucleus represents half of the genetic material-one from the egg and one from the sperm.
When we see 2PN, it means the egg has fertilized normally and is now on its way to becoming an embryo. 🌱
It’s an incredible reminder that behind every embryo transfer, every positive test, and every growing bump, there’s a moment like this happening in the lab. 💫
